When I started out in photography as a photographic agent, Martin Parr’s colour saturated exposé’s of the grimier side of the class system in the UK were setting the bar for a new approach to reportage photography. I like to think of it as brutalist photography.

His images cut through the veneer of the holiday brochure, prodding the greedy consumerism of the late 80’s and 90’s. This tapped in to the picture postcard humour shock factor which, in later years, received a backlash as classist. But the cancel-culture of this new millennium fails to expose the dark underbelly of society. It fails to apply cynical humour to a society drowning in consumerism.

Pre-digital, photographers jobs were not just to record and report, but to probe, shape and expose. Martin did that and inspired a spectrum of investigative photography after him which probed the underbelly.

Last year, Grey Model Agency collaborated with Martin Parr on a well-known luxury brand campaign with a model shooting in Paris. The release date is scheduled for early 2026 which I hope still goes ahead posthumously. It is a brave and daring move by a major label that this decade has lacked across advertising; juxtaposing luxury with a Parresque humour.
