Shocked to hear the sad news about Tim’s sudden passing. He was the rock of the GBCT and a founding member of 1st & 2nd AC Diplomas and I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time in his company at the early stages of my industry career.

We send our heartfelt condolences to Tim’s family and friends. He will be sorely missed by us all.

RIP Tim…Dee will look after you 💔

Rest In Peace: Tim Potter - Deceased: 21 May 2025

It is with great sorrow that we announce the sad news of the death of our dear friend, Tim Potter.

Tim passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday 21 May at his local hospital, after feeling unwell.

Tim's Biography
After working at a Regional Arts workshop and then a documentary production company from 1983, Tim went freelance as a Clapper/Loader in 1985. This work led to his first major focus pulling job on the aerial unit of the LWT series “Piece of Cake”, in 1987. Since then he has been a freelance focus puller working on many films and prestige television dramas. Recent films include “The Wedding Date”, “Pride” and “’71”. Recent TV dramas include “Top Boy”, “The Shadow Line” and “Dead Set”.

Tim joined the Guild in 1991 and was elected to the Board in 2006, becoming Chair in 2009.

In Tim's own words from the British Cinematographer Magazine, Issue 122, March/April 2024.
'I was invited to join the Guild in 2000. I remember very well the sense of pride I felt in the way it recognised and validated my career up to that point. I am pleased to have the opportunity to use my knowledge and experience to help guide the Guild'

We are collating your memories of Tim, in order to share them with his family. Please add them to this post.

Funeral details to follow.

Always dreamed of working in film and HETV production but felt you knew too little about how it all works to really go for it?

Or have you been in the industry for a few years and you’re finding yourself stuck in the same role unable to progress?

Here at CrewHQ, at the heart of Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, we’re launching a UK-based programme to help those that have faced significant barriers to entry into the industry.

Working across two levels, SevenUp will provide seven people, that have very little to no experience in the industry the opportunity to have 4 weeks of job shadowing, and additional seven people who have been in the industry for at least 6 years and have had two credits in a mid-level role to do job shadowing with HOD’s on some of our UK productions.

These opportunities are specifically for below-the-line crew.

Applications will go live for existing crew at mid-level on the 10th April 2025
Applications for those wishing to break into the industry go live on the 28th April 2025
