SurfaceThinking SURFACE DESIGN AWARDS 2026 NOW OFFICIALLY OPEN WITH NEW JUDGING FORMAT REVEALED

Surface Design Awards 2026 are now open for entries, with these exciting new categories and judging format. The awards, now in their 14th year, continue to champion the very best in architecture, design, and manufacturing, shining a spotlight on material excellence and design innovation from the UK and around the globe.

For 2026, the awards have been refreshed with a new process that will see a panel of distinguished judges - each selected for their specialist knowledge and expertise - evaluate entries across ten categories. The updated award categories have been devised to reflect the most innovative products and projects that improve the way we approach materiality in design. Divided between ‘Projects’ and ‘Products’, judges will lead the conversation in their area of expertise while collaborating with the panel to shape the overall decisions.

An important element of the Surface Design Show is supporting young designers, and this is now reflected with the introduction of the Emerging Talent award. This award is by invite only, student projects and universities will be invited to enter projects that demonstrate outstanding material innovation.

Shepherd& creates interior design for The Shepherd Mayfair, Hotel – a new Mayfair landmark redefining luxury hospitality

Due to open in late 2025, The Shepherd Mayfair, Hotel is a bold new presence in the heart of Mayfair, an 82-key hotel that reinterprets British luxury through a modern lens. The design team at Shepherd& was responsible for creating a narrative through intelligent design and the collective work of the design teams at all the practices involved through the architecture, interior design, the visual arts and into the brand creation, working closely with the Hotel Operators on every element to create a personal experience for the guests visiting the hotel and its bars, cafe and restaurant.

From the moment guests enter the covered walkway that leads from Stanhope Row, they are introduced to a true interpretation of hospitality. Shepherd& has used exceptional storytelling through design to create an elegant aesthetic that is rooted in British design tradition and reflective of the building's history.

Beyond the rooms and suites, The Shepherd Mayfair, Hotel is also home to ‘Teddy’s’, an intimate cocktail bar tucked beneath the hotel.

Shepherd& is delivering a hotel that blends design with cultural insight within hospitality, that is both personal and elevated - a hallmark of their design philosophy.
