🚨BREAKING: German Troops Pull Out of Greenland Hours After Trump Tariff Threat
Fifteen German soldiers and officials abruptly left Greenland early Sunday after receiving sudden orders from Berlin, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened major tariffs against European allies.
The unit had arrived on Friday, January 16, for a NATO reconnaissance mission. Less than 44 hours later, the soldiers canceled all meetings and boarded a flight back to Europe. No reason was given for the withdrawal, despite officials saying a day earlier the mission could be extended.
The timing comes one day after Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from Germany, Denmark, France, the UK, and other countries, set to begin February 1. The tariffs target nations opposing U.S. control of Greenland.
Trump said the tariffs would rise to 25% on June 1 and remain in place until what he called the “complete and total purchase of Greenland” is agreed to.
He also warned that European military activity in the region is a “very dangerous game,” arguing the U.S. must secure Greenland to counter Russia and China.
Officials have not said whether the troop withdrawal is connected to the tariff threat.
