This weekend, the returns to the heart of Essaouira, Morocco. Mostly free and spread across the cityâs squares and streets, the festival celebrates and preserves the rich traditions of Gnaoua music while bringing together artists from across Africa and beyond.
From Cuba and CĂ´te dâIvoire to Mali and Tunisia, the Pan-African programme creates unique collaborations between Gnaoua masters and musicians spanning jazz, reggae, blues, rock and more.
Last year, WWFMâs and attended the festival. Kamar, host of Tealeaves, spoke with Gnaoua masters Maalam Khalid Sansi and Maalama Hind Ennaira, alongside Nigerian Afrobeats star , Cubaâs and Tunisian singer and oud virtuoso
Tealeaves is a monthly show, on the third Wednesday of each month, exploring sound through migration, seeking to appreciate the multitude of ways that migrants and the movement of people have contributed to global society and cultural richness.
