Between 1967 and 1975, Desmond Dekker reached the UK charts seven times, becoming one of the genre’s most recognisable voices.

His landmark hit “Israelites” made history in April 1969 as the first Jamaican-produced single to reach No.1 in the UK. Its success helped push reggae into the mainstream and created new opportunities for artists including Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff and T***s & The Maytals.

This week we are commemorating the King of Ska, Desmond Dekker, 20 years on from his passing.

Dekker's influence on ska and reggae remains as powerful as ever. As one of Jamaica’s first global music stars, he helped bring the sound of Jamaican music to audiences worldwide, reaching the UK charts seven times between 1967 and 1975.

His landmark hit “Israelites” made history in April 1969 as the first Jamaican-produced single to reach No.1 in the UK, paving the way for generations of reggae artists that followed.
