THEY DIDN’T JUST KILL PATRICE LUMUMBA — THEY TRIED TO ERASE HIM FROM HISTORY.

Meet Gérard Soete, the former Belgian gendarme who later admitted to taking part in the destruction of Lumumba’s remains.

On 17 January 1961, Patrice Emery Lumumba, the first Prime Minister of the newly independent Republic of Congo, was assassinated in Katanga alongside Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito.

After their deaths, their bodies were secretly exhumed and destroyed. Soete later said that Lumumba’s body was dismembered and dissolved in acid, and claimed that it had been cut into 34 pieces.

He also admitted keeping human remains, including teeth. One tooth believed to belong to Lumumba was eventually returned to his family and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2022.

More than six decades later, the story remains a haunting reminder of how violently colonial power and the struggle for Congo's independence collided.

They tried to destroy the body. They could not destroy the legacy. 🇨🇩🕊️
