SONAM WANGCHUK ENDS 26-DAY HUNGER STRIKE AFTER TALKS WITH UNION MINISTERS

New Delhi | Breaking News

Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike early Friday after Union Ministers JP Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh met him at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Visuals showed the 59-year-old breaking his fast by drinking soup in the presence of the ministers.

Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike since June 28, expressing solidarity with students protesting alleged examination paper leaks and demanding accountability from the Union government. His health deteriorated during the prolonged fast, leading to his transfer from the protest site to Medanta Hospital for continuous medical supervision.

According to reports, JP Nadda and Dr. Jitendra Singh held late-night discussions with Wangchuk before he agreed to call off the protest. Before ending his fast, Wangchuk sought assurances that students and young people who participated peacefully in the protests would not face retaliatory or punitive action.

Initially admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after doctors warned of serious health risks, Wangchuk was later shifted to Medanta Hospital following directions from the Delhi High Court, where he remained under medical supervision.

While his decision marks a significant turning point in the ongoing youth-led protest movement, the full details of the assurances given during the meeting and the future course of the protests have not yet been officially disclosed.
