This year, Vintage is marking the 40th anniversary of Atwood’s seminal novel.

On 24 September, handmaids were projected onto landmarks such as the Tate Modern, the British Library, and Whitehall Palace in London, public libraries in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Chicago, and City Hall in Atwood’s hometown.

Four exclusive videos have been created for social media to celebrate the lasting appeal and cultural and political resonance of the novel, with contributions from Sir Salman Rushdie, Elisabeth Moss, Lauren Groff, Cheryl Strayed and Samira Wiley.

Special anniversary editions have been produced for independent bookshops and Waterstones, featuring a previously unpublished essay written by Atwood in 1986.

The autumn celebration of the novel will culminate in the publication of Atwood’s memoir, Book of Lives, on 4 November.
