Age Verification Laws Are Coming, But At What Cost?

On 25th July, the UK will enforce new online age verification laws for adult content, but Reddit jumped early, blocking NSFW content from 14th July and requiring users to scan their passport or submit facial recognition just to view adult material.

The backlash has already begun.

With my conspiracy hat on (though I’m usually just early, not wrong), I can't help but ask:
Is this really about protecting children, or controlling adults?

The days of simple credit card age checks are gone. Now, you're being asked to tie your biometric data and personal ID to your private s*xual habits. Who really wants their face linked to their P0rnhub search history?

Beyond privacy, this could have broader societal consequences:

✅ Countries with legalised s*x work often report fewer s*xual assaults
❌ Countries with tight s*xual censorship (like India) report more
🤯 People need healthy outlets, not more digital gatekeepers judging what’s "appropriate"

This isn’t just a p**n issue, it’s about freedom, privacy, mental health, and the right to unwind without surveillance.

Retailers, take note: I predict an upsurge in old-school DVD sales and "offline" content consumption. A strange full-circle moment for the adult retail industry.
