🎬 How to kill a movie project before it even starts - particularly indie film projects 🎬

Studios rarely greenlight a film, and investors rarely-never back a film project based on a director's pitch alone.

The loop: Directors frequently need an actor to secure a budget (even soft financing for pre-production). BUT, the actor needs the budget to commit.

The system has weak point: the actor willing to move first. That actor can set the terms for the entire production.

An agent's job is to book work, not to build relationships with directors. A union protects rates, not relationships with directors. The actor who builds a direct relationship with a director they believe in - BEFORE there is a budget, before there is a greenlight - is the actor who makes things happen that the system cannot manufacture on its own.

Laura (1944), arguably one of the greatest film noir classics in cinema history. I like this film, and Vincent Price‘s proudly shallow character, Shelby, so much that I stole (…ahem, “borrowed/honoured”) this line and wrote it into our own film, Change the Reel. In a script coverage report ahead of us shooting the film, the reviewer added “Occasionally the script leans into self-conscious cleverness (“I can afford a blemish on my character, but not on my clothes”), but these moments largely work within the heightened noir register”. I’ve never really worked out if this was a criticism of me stealing lines and only just getting away with it, or an acknowledgment that this was a well executed reference 😂 Still, the coverage report scored an 8.5/10 and we were able to include this iconic line, expertly delivered by our femme fatale, Mercedes, to the guy staring at the barrel end of her chrome revolver! 🤟🤩🎬

Location scouting in the Hills …and generally loving the city vibes! 🎬✌️🤩

Got an amazing view of the Griffith Observatory and the iconic Hollywood hills from our hotel window, and the legendary Boulevard just outside.

Watched a movie at the TCL Chinese Theatre, and discovered our writer-director, James, has the same size hands and feet as Tarantino… such a fanboy! 😂
