"Charity forums require a different type of moderation to other forums and communities. A subtler touch, an understanding of mental health and how it can affect people’s behaviour. Each community is different, each user important"

Striking the right balance in online charity communities can be a challenge. It's important to foster connection and support, whilst maintaining a safe and respectful environment.

Here are FIVE practical tips to help you navigate this delicate balance and prioritise wellbeing in your online community:

1️⃣ LEAD BY EXAMPLE
As a community manager, set clear rules and guidelines for new members to agree to. This not only establishes the tone of the group but also reflects your organisation's values.

2️⃣ ENCOURAGE POSITIVE INTERACTIONS
Connect with your members and nurture relationships by sharing interesting stories and creating a space where everyone feels heard and valued. Authenticity is key to building trust.

3️⃣ CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS
Acknowledge and praise members who share their achievements with the community. A simple “That’s amazing!” or “I’m so happy for you!” goes a long way.

4️⃣ OFFER SUPPORT AND UNDERSTANDING
Even if you're not having a good day, smile and stay upbeat on live feeds. It’s important to “smile from the wrists down” says our community manager Jo!

5️⃣ ASK QUESTIONS TO ENCOURAGE HEALTHY CONVERSATIONS
Set discussion points to keep the community talking and bring people together, especially those who may feel isolated and need human connection.

Charities, build a thriving online community with our proven tips!

Building a successful online community requires more than just providing a platform. It's about building genuine connections between members and creating a sense of belonging.

Here are some key strategies to ensure connection is at the heart of your online community:

👉 Be a familiar face. Regularly pop into your community to chat with members. Show you're a real person who cares – engage in conversations and respond to comments with honesty and authenticity to build true connections.

👉 Personalised responses are key. Pre-written answers are a good start, but ditch the robotic replies and inject some personality to show it's you, not a script.

👉 Turn up the fun with platform tools! Explore interactive features such as polls, quizzes, and challenges to get everyone talking and learn valuable insights about your amazing community.

👉 Content by the community, for the community! Celebrate and get involved with user-generated content – like the NSPCC post that sparked participation (read more in our blog below).

Is your charity's social media strategy spread too thin?

With the rise of new platforms and concerns about online safety, it’s no longer practical to ‘be everywhere’.

For charities, where budgets are often tight and teams are small, trying to cover multiple platforms can lead to mediocre engagement and missed opportunities. That's why it's time to reassess and focus on the right platforms - those that align with your values and your audience - for more impact.

So, how do you go about choosing the right social media platforms for your charity?

This blog dives into the importance of value-aligned platforms, prioritising online safety, and exploring hidden gems like Bluesky and Discord.

Honouring Women Driving Positive Change Online!

This spring, we're celebrating the incredible women we're privileged to collaborate with every day. They're working hard to make the online world a better place for ALL women and girls, representing organisations like Blue Cross UK, Media Trust, SuperAwesome, Dementia UK, Theirworld and Directory of Social Change.

Join us over the next few weeks, as we share their wisdom and passion for creating a more inclusive and equitable digital space.

➡️ Meet Holly Tuke, Acting Social Media Manager, RNIB

Holly is driven by immense gratitude to support blind and partially sighted communities daily, giving voice to a community she's proud to be part of. Knowing her team's accessible social media breaks down barriers is a key motivator, aligning with her passion for a more accessible world.

Holly's favourite piece of advice?

"Disabled women and girls are not the problem, the inaccessible society we live in is the problem. For them not to feel like a burden when asking for something to be made accessible, because accessibility should be the norm."

👉 Inspired by Holly? Follow RNIB for more information on making your content accessible.

Social media managers, it's time to make your online content truly inclusive.

Don't let accessibility be an afterthought by elevating your reach and impact with these FOUR crucial tips:

• ALT Text: Use descriptive ALT text when sharing images on social media. This allows visually impaired users to understand the content within the image. Follow RNIB for tools and resources to get you started!

• CamelCase Hashtags: By capitalising the first letter of each word, you make your hashtags , which increases their visibility and engagement.

• Limit Emojis: Emojis can be a great way to add personality to your posts. However, to ensure maximum accessibility, limit the use of emojis and place them at the beginning or end of a sentence. This helps screen readers correctly interpret the content.

• High Contrast Colours: When designing your visuals, remember to use high-contrast colours for your text. This ensures that the text STANDS OUT and is easily readable by everyone, regardless of visual abilities. Check contrast with this useful tool: https://contrast-checker.com/

➡️ Meet Laura Mason, Social Media Manager, Dementia UK

Laura loves the fulfilling nature of charity work, especially her amazing colleagues. Hearing directly from those the charity supports through social media is incredibly rewarding.

Laura's favourite piece of advice?

"One of my favourite pieces of advice is to always write down all your small and big wins. I keep a folder on Outlook aptly named ‘nice emails’. Whenever I am complimented on my work by a colleague or manager, I save it in this folder. If I’m having a bad day, or imposter syndrome is rearing its ugly head, I look in the folder and am reminded of all my achievements. This helps my self-confidence immensely and to recognise my worth to the organisation."

👉 Do you have a WINS folder? We'd love to hear if you keep your compliments 👇
