We’ve received many enquiries recently asking for recommendations for sources that discuss Ithell Colquhoun’s taro deck.

Our original publication on the topic (2018) is now long out of print, but for those of you interested I have written a substantial essay. ‘The Perfume of the Secret Rose: Ithell Colquhoun and the Taro’ documents Colquhoun’s lifetime quest to create a taro that remained true to Golden Dawn principles. Running to 7000 words, my analysis draws upon a wealth of previously unpublished images and source texts.

It’s available in our recently published collection of scholarly essays, ‘Surrealism and the Tarot: A Love Story’, edited by the amazing Tessel Bauduin. You won’t find it on Amazon, but the details, list of contents, and contributors may be found on our website.

Today we’re recovering from an absolutely wonderful launch event at the Courtauld last night for our latest title, Surrealism and the Tarot: A Love Story. Such a great audience and the team at the Courtauld made us all very welcome. There were familiar faces and friends of 30+ years, but also a new generation who have taken an interest in our publishing programme. It’s been a long time since I have been asked to sign so many copies of a new publication…

Such a wonderful evening last night at the Warburg Institute celebrating the publication of M.E. Warlick’s groundbreaking study, The Alchemical Feminine: Women, Gender, and Sexuality in Alchemical Images. Both in person and remotely, nearly 200 people attended her survey lecture, introduced by Dr Georgiana Hedesan (University of Oxford), and followed by a Q&A and wine reception. Our thanks to for her professionalism and the team , who made us all very welcome.

This title has seen significant sales since it was announced just over a month ago… we are therefore holding the special pre-publication price until the end of this month. Carpe diem!

Over 300 richly illustrated pages, this sweeping analysis aims to explore the important early role of women in a field increasingly dominated by men. We will be opening the pre-order in a few weeks and will share full details then, and perhaps even news of the launch party!

The original enamels for Ithell Colquhoun’s extraordinary series The Taro as Colour are currently on view at Tate Britain as the grand finale in their first major exhibition of the artist’s work. Last weekend Aïsha and I ventured into London to see them again first hand. I was especially pleased that the Fulgur Press deck compared very favourably in the accuracy of colour with the original artwork.

And for those of you interested… I have contributed a 7k word essay on Colquhoun’s relationship with the tarot for our forthcoming book, ‘Surrealism and the Tarot: A Love Story’. It traces her interest from 1928-1977, and is illustrated with numerous examples of her tarot designs throughout the period. The book is due out in November, and pre-order will open in September.

Until then, we still have copies available of the deck itself, magically custom scented by via the Fulgur Press website. This edition is currently about 40% sold, and it will be our last. Carpe diem!
