Do you know why Luton’s Hat District is called that?
Luton has a huge history of hat manufacturing & was one of the leading locations for this industry for 200+ years! 🎩
Every year the town would celebrate their success & their workers with a bonnet parade on George street & hundreds of people would gather for this.
In 1935 Luton had 7 hat factories & warehouses, employing 1,000 women & 900 men between them. Many firms were family owned & they were crucial to establishing Luton as a town of the industry.
