Public turns out in numbers to discuss future of the Cobb
More than 200 residents attended a drop-in session at the Jubilee Pavilion today to learn about plans to protect the future of the Cobb.

The event, organised by Dorset Coast Forum, gave members of the public the opportunity to view proposals aimed at safeguarding Lyme Regis’ historic harbour wall, which engineers say is facing serious structural risk.

Ongoing sea-floor erosion and constant wave pressure are weakening the foundations of the centuries-old breakwater. Without intervention, the structure could fail, putting the harbour, seafront and around 100 nearby properties at heightened risk of flooding.

Dorset Council project engineers Matthew Penny and Ian Fitz were present to explain the recommended solution, which includes installing a low-level toe concrete foundation and tension piles to anchor the inner harbour walls more securely.

Despite strong community support, the council has warned that there is currently a £4.1 million funding gap. In addition to securing funds, the project must also obtain the necessary planning consents before work can begin.

The Cobb is Under Threat – Help Protect Its Future
Lyme Regis’ iconic harbour wall, the Cobb, is facing serious structural risks. Ongoing sea-floor erosion and constant wave pressure are weakening the foundations of this historic breakwater. Without urgent action, the Cobb could fail, putting the harbour, seafront, and around 100 nearby properties at risk of flooding.

A major stabilisation project—including a proposed low-level toe foundation and tension piles to anchor the inner harbour walls—has been delayed due to a £4.1 million funding shortfall and the need to obtain the required planning consents.

To keep the community informed, Dorset Coast Forum, on behalf of Dorset Council, is hosting a public drop-in event to share updates on the Cobb Stabilisation Scheme.

What to Expect at the Drop-In Session

Learn more about:
Why urgent stabilisation work is needed
The engineering complexities and organisations involved
The recently discovered void, how it happened, repairs, and what it means for the future

This is an important chance for local residents, businesses, and visitors to understand the project and show support for safeguarding the future of the Cobb and Lyme Regis’ coastline.

Your voice matters — together, we can protect this vital piece of Dorset’s heritage. Please do find time to call in and take a look.

🎄Fabulous Response to Lyme’s Christmas Lights🎄
A huge crowd gathered in Lyme Regis on Saturday evening to celebrate the much-anticipated Christmas lights switch-on, and organisers say the positive response made all their efforts worthwhile.

Rob James, chairman of the Lyme Regis Christmas Lights Committee, said:

“We were delighted to see such a big crowd turn out for Saturday evening’s big switch-on, and the huge amount of positive feedback we’ve received both in person and on social media makes the work of our small voluntary team feel so worthwhile.

“A special thanks to our primary sponsors — Dorset and Devon Holiday Cottages, Lyme Bay Holidays, SWIM, Rock Point Inn and Toad Hall Cottages — as well as all our amazing business supporters. Their names can be found at lymechristmaslights.co.uk/supporters.

“I’d like to give a big thank you to Steve Parsons and John King, our installation team, for doing such a great job putting up the lights, and to Karl John of Regis Maintenance Service for his assistance. Thanks also to Lyme Regis Town Council for their continued financial support, to the road closure team, to all the volunteers who helped at the lantern workshop, and to those who held a collection bucket and helped steward.

“We were thrilled that Santa was able to turn on the lights for us once again, and extend our thanks to Sarah and Neville Causley of Lyme Regis Charity Sleigh for ensuring he arrived. Thank you also to Lyme Regis majorettes, Lyme Morris and Blackdown Samba for their fantastic performances, and to the crew from Lyme Regis Fire Station for attending.

“Finally, a big thank you to Penn Farm Christmas Trees Charmouth of Charmouth for donating the Christmas tree at Bell Cliff.”

Over 60 Christmas lanterns were made at the lantern workshop in the Pine Hall of Lyme Regis Baptist Church yesterday afternoon. At 4pm Ben Matthews of Dorset and Devon Holiday Cottages had the very difficult task of deciding on the best entries in each of the age categories. The Mayor of Lyme Regis, Cllr Philip Evans, distributed the prizes.

As always, the adult category was fiercely contested. There were some fabulous creations and at 5pm, the proud lantern-makers gathered outside and paraded down Broad Street, showing off their glowing designs just in time for the big Christmas lights switch-on.

Town sparkles in gold and white Christmas display
The rain eased just in time for celebrations as a huge crowd gathered on Broad Street to witness the magical switching-on of the town’s Christmas lights.
Earlier in the afternoon, more than 60 lanterns were created at the Christmas Lantern Workshop at the Baptist Church (photos to follow). At 5pm the brilliant Lyme Regis Majorettes led the switch-on parade with an energetic routine, followed by Santa on his sleigh, who arrived to begin the official countdown. The children’s lantern procession followed behind.

As the countdown ended, Broad Street was transformed, glowing in a stunning gold-and-white Christmas display.

After the switch-on, the fabulous Blackdown Samba entertained the crowd in front of the Christmas tree, and Lyme Morris delighted the audience with their performance.

For those who may not know, the Lyme Regis Christmas lights are organised by a dedicated volunteer team, , led by chairman Rob James and supported by Karen Skardon James, Alan Vian, Annette Denning, Gilly Clark, Linda Peadon and other helpers plus the installation team of Steve Parsons and John King.

You can support their hard work and help ensure Lyme sparkles in future years by purchasing raffle tickets at lymechristmaslights.co.uk/raffle, with fantastic prizes including cash and meals in local restaurants.

Keep and eye on our sister page Love Lyme Regis for more photos and videos of the lights.

You can show your support to help ensure our town continues to shine each festive season by supporting the Grand Raffle 2025, with the chance to win one of five fantastic prizes:

£300 – sponsored by The Slipway
£200 – sponsored by Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium
£100 – sponsored by Bright Future Financial
£100 meal voucher for the The Harbour Inn, Lyme Regis
£90 meal voucher for the Alexandra Hotel and Restaurant

Purchase your raffle tickets at: lymechristmaslights.co.uk/raffle or from Fine Art and Framing in Broad Street, The Slipway shop by the Cobb or Joshua and Annette Denning.

The voluntary committee fundraises throughout the year to cover the costs of purchasing and maintaining the lights. Your support helps pay the installation team, purchase new lights, and fund essential expenses such as insurance for both the switch-on event and for the duration of the display.

This year, more than 75 illuminated trees have already been placed around the town ready for the big switch-on at 5pm this Saturday, 22nd November.

Let’s keep Lyme sparkling together this Christmas! ✨
