Did you know that different species of parasitic gut roundworms have different mouthparts, depending upon how and where in the gut they feed. Their mouthparts, with ‘teeth’ or lancets can be innies or outies!
I created some needle felted worms from alpaca fibre to illustrate the point. Haemonchus contortus, the Barbers Pole Worm is a definite ‘outie,’ with razor sharp lancets to slash the mucosa of C3 to let the blood!

A great day in the parasite lab teaching the Introduction to Parasitology Course to Sam and Jemma from Reservoir Alpacas. It's fantastic when people new to alpacas want to understand their alpacas inside and out for a truly healthy, happy herd. Thanks especially to Jemma for undertaking such a long journey to join us. I am sure that the Course will help your veterinary studies.

NEW BONUS LESSON
If you’re already part of the ‘alpacaparasites’ community you’ll be pleased to hear that this month I’m adding a new bonus lesson. EMAC (Eimeria macusaniensis) continues to be a mysterious parasite, often confused with spores and misunderstood by most.

With brand new video sequences, I’ll lead you through the organism, its size, shape colour and meaningful characteristics. Identify, count and understand what is happening inside you adult and cria alpacas. Numbers are important but biology is key!

Not just a boring, forgettable life cycle diagram but a clear insight to what this gut parasite means to your herd, today and going forward.

If you have already purchased the Online Introduction to Parasitology Course, thank you, and this new lesson will be coming to you soon.

If you’re still thinking about getting up to speed with your own on farm parasite testing, then take a look at

and you could be taking control sooner than you think.
