Easter Countdown #11 - Sunday

Easter morning…
The day that everything changed….
Jesus’ friends began the day, still feeling puzzled…
And sad and confused about the events of the Friday before…
But they were about to get the biggest surprise…

They went to visit the tomb…
Where Jesus’ body had been placed…
But the door way was open…
The body was missing…
And and an angel greeted them instead…

And suddenly Jesus was there!
As alive as ever before!
Standing… talking… laughing and joking with them…
It was the most amazing miracle of all…

Soon the news spread…
Throughout the city… and far and wide…
About the amazing events of Easter Sunday morning…
It travelled through Jerusalem…
Then throughout the country of Israel…
And before long…
The news had travelled all over the world…

Easter Countdown #10 - The Cross

The soldiers took Jesus…
They were cruel… and mean…
They hurt him… they laughed at him… and called him cruel names…
They placed a crown of thorns
And then they led him off…

Jesus was put on a cross…
On a hill outside of the city…
And all the people came to watch - his friends, his enemies…
(and those just curious…)
The came to watch to see if this was the end…

Jesus died…

Was it really all over; was there no more to say?
Would the adventures really end in this way?
Was it really all over, when it had barely begun?
Or had something rather extraordinary been done?

Easter Countdown #9

Jesus was taken to Pilate…
The head of the Roman authorities…
Now, Pilate was puzzled…
You see, he knew that Jesus had done no wrong…
And yet he’d been arrested…

Pilate thought… and thought…
And then he had an idea…
There was a tradition…
At that time of year, to set one prisoner free…
So Pilate called the people and gave them a choice…
Release Jesus…
Or a man called Barrabas…

Now, Barrabas was a criminal - a nasty type…
And thoroughly deserved to pay for his crimes…
Whereas Jesus…
Well, he’d done no wrong…
Surely it was obvious to tell who was guilty…
And who should be set free…

But the crowd called for Barrabas…
(The Pharisees had stirred them up… telling them what to say…)
‘Free Barrabas!’ they cried…
And as for Jesus…
They called for him to be be punished instead…

Easter Countdown #8

Simon Peter was scared…
Jesus had been arrested… his friends were all scattered…
And Simon Peter found himself alone…
On the unfriendly streets…
Of Jerusalem…

‘Are you friends with Jesus?’
Asked unfriendly voices…
Peter was scared…
So, even though he knew the truth in his heart…
Out loud he said:
‘No.’
Three times…
He said: ‘No, I’ve never met him before in my life.’

Meanwhile…
Jesus was put on trial…
In front of the Pharisees - the religious leaders of the city…
However…
Although they accused him again and again…
They could find nothing that he had done wrong…

But…
There was one thing…
One thing that made them truly angry above all else…
The fact that people were saying Jesus was God’s own Son…
This, they could not stand…
So in a fury, they condemned him…
And sent him off to the Romans to be punished…

Easter Countdown #7

In the Garden of Gethsemane…
Jesus knelt to pray…
While his friends went to sleep…
A short distance away…

Jesus knew what lay ahead….
He knew how hard it would be…
So he prayed to his father…
To see if, somehow…
There could be another way…

Then Judas arrived…
A group of soldiers at his side…
Marching and shouting..
Fierce and frightening in the darkness of the garden…

Then Jesus was arrested….
And the soldiers took him away…

Easter Countdown #6

The night wasn’t over...
There were more surprises on the way…
Jesus stood…
And announced to his friends…
That soon he would leave them and be going away…

Then he took bread and wine…
And taught his friends a new way…
To remember him…
And for them to be with him - in their hearts…
While he was away…

He explained:
‘This bread is my body…
That will be broken for you…
The wine is my blood…
That will be poured out too…’

So they shared the bread and the wine…
With mixed feelings - confused and surprised…
Sad and perplexed…
Completely unaware of what would happen next…

Easter Countdown #5

It was the time of the Passover…
Jesus gathered in the upper room with his closet friends…
But that trouble was coming…

Jesus stood up and made a shocking announcement:
‘One of you here will betray me…’
Judas…
He knew exactly what Jesus was talking about…
And so…
His heart filled with darkness…
Judas got up from the table… and went out into the night…
His terrible plan to begin…

And there were more surprises in store…
For Jesus got up from his seat…
Took a bowl of water…
And began to wash his disciples’ feet!

Jesus explained…
His was not a kingdom of power…
But of love… and serving others…
Where everyone is called to take care of all their sisters and brothers…
