IGP TOURAY PROMOTES TRAFFIC OFFICER FOR COURAGEOUS ACT OF DUTY UNDER DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES

Date: June 10, 2026

The Inspector General of Police, Seedy Mukhtar Touray, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, promoted Sergeant Alhagie Badjie of the Police Traffic Unit to the rank of Inspector in recognition of his exceptional courage, professionalism, and remarkable restraint during a dangerous encounter with the driver of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle.

The incident occurred while the officer was lawfully carrying out traffic enforcement duties after the driver reportedly failed to produce a valid insurance certificate for the vehicle upon request.

During the engagement, the driver allegedly wound up the vehicle’s window, trapping Inspector Badjie’s hand, before recklessly driving off in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.

Faced with an immediate threat to his safety and determined to avoid being dragged along the roadway, the officer was compelled to climb onto the bonnet of the moving vehicle while repeatedly instructing the driver to stop.

Despite several warnings from the officer, the suspect continued driving from Banjul to Manjai, demonstrating a blatant disregard for public safety. The driver eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene but was subsequently arrested by the Police. The matter is currently before the courts.

The promotion reflects the Inspector General’s recognition of Inspector Badjie’s courage, discipline, and commitment to duty in the face of significant danger. His actions exemplify the professionalism and resilience expected of members of the Gambia Police Force.

The Gambia Police Force commends Inspector Badjie for his bravery, composure, and steadfast dedication to public service under challenging and life-threatening circumstances.

Congratulations to Inspector Badjie and the Police Traffic Unit on this well-deserved recognition.

UDP Leader Hon. Ousainou Darboe Speaks on Coalition Talks

The leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), Hon. Ousainou Darboe, has stated that his party has always participated in coalition discussions since 2001. However, he noted that the main challenge has always been how the various parties can come together under a common arrangement.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with Sky Power Radio and TV, Hon. Darboe said that it is time for political stakeholders to be honest with one another.

If we are to be honest, how can my big number join your small number and then follow you.He asked, emphasizing the importance of recognizing political realities during coalition negotiations.

He also criticized those who say they support the UDP but do not support its leader, describing such sentiments as unfortunate. According to him, UDP supporters have remained loyal to the party over the years.

Hon. Darboe further highlighted that the UDP is currently taking part in the ongoing coalition discussions and will continue to do so, as the party's aim and objective is to see all opposition forces come together to bring about change.

The UDP leader also stressed that no one can blackmail his party simply because they refuse to accept UDP's ideology while expecting the UDP to accept theirs.

In conclusion, Hon. Darboe called on all stakeholders to unite and work together to rescue the country.

Earlier this morning, What's On Gambia reported that QTV senior journalist, Mr. Ansumana S.O Nyass, was stabbed by armed robbers and subsequently taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

A few minutes ago, we received information that Mr. S.O Nyass has been discharged from the Ndemban Clinic

We pray for his speedy and complete recovery and strongly condemn this inhumane and criminal act.

Violence against journalists and innocent citizens has no place in our society. We wish him strength, good health, and a swift return to his normal activities.
