Firefighters will gather in Stockport town centre on Friday 4 September to unveil a Red Plaque in memory of Police Superintendent Howard Beckwith KPFSM, who died in the line of duty in 1926.

The ceremony takes place at the site of the old Stockport fire station, now Merseyway Shopping Centre, next to the A6.

The location marks the point where Beckwith, then officer in charge of Stockport Borough Police Fire Brigade, began his final journey.

PC Egerton died on duty on 11 March 1982. He was killed during a struggle in which he was repeatedly stabbed as he attempted to arrest a thief in a factory yard in Farnworth.

PC Ahmed died on duty on 31 August 1999. He was on motorcycle patrol when he saw a car ahead of him that was suspected to be stolen. The driver of the stolen car suddenly reversed and PC Ahmed manoeuvred his motorcycle out of the way but the driver then drove straight at PC Ahmed and rammed his motorcycle forward into a junction with oncoming traffic.

Insp Codling died on duty on 14 September 1989. He was shot and fatally wounded by a man acting suspiciously amongst the lorries parked overnight at the Birch Motorway Services.
