A new project from Alan Davis, a four track e.p. out now and album to follow in a few months. Here's what I think of the tracks already out...

I was really chuffed when Alan Davis, the mastermind and driving force behind Redemption Zero asked me to review his new Babylon Sessions e.p. and even on first listening, I was even more glad he did. This is an excellent collection of new songs with a supremely talented cast of goth, post-punk and darkwave artists (from Ghost Dance, Chameleons, Lorries to name just a few) contributing to these tracks, that have got me excited for the full album release in December (and please! please! please! some love dates too!).
Redemption Zero is the result of a year-long period of development, reflection and songwriting that was released last week - almost exactly twelve months to the day of leaving Rose Of Avalanche. These are tracks that have evolved across all four seasons and come together with a sound that seems apt to be shared as we head into autumn and winter - dark tunes for dark nights, but with a comfort and glow that fans who are familiar with Alan’s music will more than appreciate (and those who aren’t yet will feel like they do before the end of the first few tracks).
(this is) Babylon is the perfect example of this. It starts with an energy and building beat that draws you into the world that the lyrics conjour straight away. As you’re welcomed into the darkness, it soars. Adding atmospheric vocals in the chorus to draw you in even more and some rasping guitars over the electro backbeat feels like we’re being spoiled as the song gets even deeper. What an opener!
Lavinia switches the mood down to something a little slower and sombre, with lyrics like a lament or mournful love letter to someone lost and delivered in almost Bowie-esque tones. A thoughtful ballad that shows off some contract to the other tracks and adds a bit of something the other tracks don’t offer.
The Darkest Times opens, slinking between a mellow middle eastern vibe and dark brooding jagged guitars, overlayed with some strong and poignant lyrics. Of these tracks I’d say this paints the most vivid of pictures, almost a meditation, a head-trip up to the very last note. I can see this played live in front of waves of flailing arms (and maybe a goth pyramid or two!).
Dead Souls has a great hook-beat and trancey guitars, building the pace as it goes and adding layers of sound, drawing you in more and more throughout the full six minutes sonic splendor. Of all the tracks this one is my favourite of them so far.
To paraphrase a line or two from Dead Souls: [These Songs] Keep Calling Me! as I’ve been listening to them on heavy rotation for the past couple of weeks now and after hearing them, I think you will too. These tracks set a high bar for the rest of the album and if they’re anywhere near as well crafted as these, it’ll be a strong contender for a lot of folks' album of the year. Redemption HERO!
