Commercial Bank of says customers must link digital ID to bank accounts to access services
Addis Abeba — The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia ( ) has announced that customers who fail to link their bank accounts with a valid digital identification number will no longer be able to access banking services after specified deadlines.
In a statement issued on 18 December 2025, the state-owned bank said customers are required to visit any CBE branch and submit their 16-digit Fayda Account Number ( ), which will be linked to their bank accounts. Failure to comply, the bank warned, will prevent customers from conducting deposits, withdrawals, and other banking transactions.
CBE said the implementation will be carried out in phases. In major urban centers, including Addis Abeba, Harari Region, and Dire Dawa, customers have from 11 December 2025 to 9 January 2026 to complete the linking process. From 10 January 2026, presentation of a FAN will be mandatory to access banking services.
The same timeline applies to major regional cities. In main woreda towns, customers have until 8 February 2026 to link their accounts, with mandatory enforcement beginning on 9 February 2026.
For customers in rural woredas and kebeles, the deadline to link accounts is 8 April 2026, after which a FAN will be required starting 9 April 2026, according to the statement.
CBE urged customers to complete the process promptly to avoid service disruptions and to follow the registration procedures carefully to safeguard their accounts.
The bank said the directive follows guidance issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), which requires all financial institutions to harmonize customer data with the Fayda National ID system, also known as VeriFayda.
The NBE informed banks on 4 December 2025 that the harmonization is mandatory and forms part of a national plan to fully roll out digital ID services across the financial sector by 2030.
According to the central bank, the measure aims to align customer records across banks, microfinance institutions, and insurance companies with the VeriFayda database, strengthen security, improve service delivery, and establish a unified digital financial infrastructure.

በመሆኑም ክቡራን ደንበኞቻችን ሒሳብን ከፋይዳ መታወቂያ ጋር የማጣመሩ ሥራም ሆነ ሌሎች ከሞባይል ባንኪንግ ጋር የተያያዙ እና ማናቸውም አገልግሎቶች እርስዎ በአካል ወደ ቅርንጫፍ ካልሄዱ/ካልቀረቡ በስተቀር በስልክ ተደውሎ የማይሰጥ መሆኑን አውቃችሁ በስልክ ለሚመጡ ጥያቄዎች ምላሽ ባለመስጠት እራሳችሁን ከአጭበርባሪዎች እንድትጠብቁ በአክብሮት እናሳውቃለን!
