BOBI WINE DENIED ASYLUM AFTER US PERSECUTION CLAIMS

Opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has been denied political asylum by the United States after a formal assessment by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) concluded that his claims of political persecution were without merit.

The decision marks a significant turn in the legal status of the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, who had been residing in the U.S. following a self-imposed exile after Uganda’s recent general elections.

According to sources familiar with the proceedings, Kyagulanyi initially entered the United States on a tourist visa. Following his arrival, he filed an application for political asylum, asserting that he faced imminent threat and persecution from Ugandan authorities.

However, the DHS assessment reportedly found no credible evidence to support these claims. Sources indicate that the review highlighted the continued operation of multiple opposition politicians, including members of Kyagulanyi’s own NUP party, within Uganda without significant state-sponsored persecution.

The assessment further noted that legal actions taken against other political figures in Uganda were tied to specific criminal allegations ranging from treason to terrorism rather than broad political suppression.

The findings align with longstanding statements from Ugandan authorities, who have repeatedly maintained that Kyagulanyi has not been charged with any crime and remains free to engage in political activities provided he adheres to the rule of law.

Following the rejection of his asylum bid, Kyagulanyi was instructed to depart the United States upon the expiration of his tourist visa to avoid deportation.

In an interview with France 24 on March 24, Kyagulanyi preemptively announced his intention to return to Uganda, framing the decision as a voluntary end to his exile rather than a response to the denial of his asylum request.

Clarification on Military Police Deployments at Checkpoints in the Kampala Metropolitan Area

Tuesday, 10 March 2026

The UPDF Military Police Brigade, working with the Uganda Police Force have embarked on an operation to restore sanity on Ugandan roads, ensure full compliance with traffic regulations by ALL motorists, impound unregistered or numberless vehicles, and curb the illegal use of sirens, among other measures.

The operation was launched effective Monday, 9 March 2026 and will proceed in force for as long as necessary. This is therefore to dismiss the insinuations from some quarters that the snap checkpoints mounted by the Military and Uganda Police traffic corps is an effort to apprehend NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine). No one is looking for or interested in the NUP leader, the aim of the police forces is to restore discipline, total observance of traffic regulations, and curtail criminal activities by some motorists on the roads.

Besides, the enforcement measures are not new, and have been employed in the past to achieve similar objectives. Motorists, including motorcyclists, are urged to cooperate and comply with the Military Police and Uganda Traffic Police directives for the common good.

The Judiciary is currently holding about UGX 54.4 billion in bail money and security deposits, Acting Chief Registrar Pamela Lamunu Ocaya told Parliament's Public Accounts Committee on Mar. 4. 2026.

The funds represent cash bail and other securities not yet refunded to suspects who met bail conditions, were acquitted, or had charges dropped.

MPs raised concerns over hardship caused to citizens who often raise bail through loans or family contributions. Permanent Secretary, Pius Bigirimana, has called on individuals who made bail payments to file their claims.
