Utrecht turned a highway back into a canal.
In the 1970s, part of the city’s historic Catharijnesingel canal was filled in and replaced by a multi-lane road.
Decades later, the road was removed and the water returned — reconnecting Utrecht’s old canal ring with greenery, walkways, and public space.
The restored canal reopened in 2020, allowing boats to circle the old city center again.
