ROCKIN' ROBIN (for Brass Band)

Rockin' Robin was originally written by Leon Rene and recorded by Bobby Day in 1958, but reached a wider global acclaim from the 1972 cover of the song by Michael Jackson, originally as part of his 'Got To Be there' album and later released as a single.

🎺 WAR DANCE OF THE RED COSSACKS
Composed for Jaren Hornmusikforening 🇳🇴

2018 marked the centenary of the Red Cossack's declaring independence from the Russian state following the revolutions of 1917. The music combines more contemporary musical elements with that of the melodies, rhythms and modes traditionally used in early soviet music.

This piece was composed for Jaren Hornmusikkforening as part of their programme for the 2018 SIDDIS Championships held in Stavanger, Norway.

🎺 MIRROR OF THE HEART (Cornet Solo)
💿 Recorded on: Violet Volume 1 - Brassband Willebroek

'Mirror of the Heart' was composed for Belgian Cornet soloist Lode Violet for performances and recordings with the Wallberg Band (CH) and Brass Band Willebroek (B).

The inspiration for the title of the work is taken from a collection of poems by the same name of late American poet Sara Teasdale (1884 - 1933); the centre of which are 54 deeply personal poems which - as a result - remained unpublished until after Teasdale's death. This work aims to reflect that particularly personal and reflective feel portrayed within the 'heart' of this collection.

⛰ ON ILKLEY MOOR BAH'TAT 🎺

'On Ikley Moor Baht'at' was arranged specially to celebrate Yorkshire Day on Saturday 1st August, 2020. The original work was performed and recorded virtually by a band from each of the 4 ridings of Yorkshire with the arrangement being made with this 'distance banding' idea in mind. Each of the verses is painted in a unique way to each other, telling the story and character behind the lyrics - which are sung in the traditional Yorkshire dialect.

🚨 NEW RELEASE - LIFT HIGH THE CROSS (for Brass Band) 🎺

'Lift High The Cross' is a new substantial work for brass band, composed for Foden's Band and commissioned by the Armagh Old Boys Silver Band Brass Band Summer School to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church in Armagh.

The work itself can be used as a test piece or as an extended concert work and is based upon 2 hymn tunes - 'Lift High The Cross' and 'How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place' (which features as a standalone arrangement in the central section).

UNDER THE COVER OF NIGHT (Euphonium & Baritone feature)

'Under the Cover of Night' was composed for BD1 Brass as part of a set of music inspired by the fairytale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian.‍

In BD1's adaption of the fairytale, Maid Marian is held hostage by the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and it is up to Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men to rescue her from captivity. This mysterious bluesy feature for Flugel, Drum Kit and Euphonium & Baritone section paints the picture of the group quietly creeping around in their attempt to rescue Marian. Within the music, there is opportunity for staging, with the Merry Men (Euphoniums & Baritones) moving around the band to reach Marian (Flugel) on the other side of the hall.

AGRABAH SUNRISE (for Brass Band)

'Agrabah Sunrise' was composed for the Foden's Band's Aladdin themed programme at the 2023 Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Glasshouse, Gateshead.

The music uses a traditional Western Asian Raga called 'Bhairav' - traditionally practised in the early hours of the morning - as it's base and features extensive technical solos for Soprano, Cornet, Tenor Horn and Euphonium.

CASPER'S LAMENT (for Brass Band)

'Casper's Lament' was composed for the Foden's Band's appearance at the 2021 Brass in Concert Championships held at The Sage, Gateshead.

The music is inspired by the lesser—known side to 'Casper the Friendly Ghost'; a "good ghost" who — much to the annoyance of his uncles — chooses to help people rather than scare them. Despite the uplifting and joyful narrative to the 'Casper' stories, there is a much more tragic back—story of how he come to be.Casper's mother passed away during his birth leaving him to be raised solely by his extremely devoted father until the age of 12 when — having begged his father for a sled to play in the snow — Casper contracted pneumonia from playing out in the cold for too long and passed away shortly after.

Throughout Casper's childhood years, the pair were inseparable. So much so, that after his tragically young death, Casper simply could not leave his father to be alone in the mortal world and as a result he stuck around as the ghost we love come to know and love through the many books, series and films over the years.

A CHICHESTER PRELUDE (for Brass Band)

'A Chichester Prelude' was composed for BD1 Brass as part of aprogramme inspired by the life of British astronaut Tim Peake. This prelude starts the story of Peake's life with his birth in the Sussex city of Chichester, with much of the musical material being derived from the 'Sussex Carol'.

BENEATH THE STARS (Cornet Solo)

'Beneath The Stars' was composed for Mark Wilkinson and the Foden's Band for the 2023 Brass in Concert Championships held at The Glasshouse, Gateshead.

The theme for the programme celebrated 30 years of Aladdin's premiere on screens in the United Kingdom and in this section of the story, Aladdin and Jasmine take a magic carpet ride beneath the starry skies as their love for one another grows stronger, during which Aladdin reveals his true self to Jasmine as being Prince Ali Ababwa and not the poor commoner that he dresses as to escape the stresses of royal life.

PRELUDE ON ST CLEMENTS (for Brass Band)

'Prelude on St Clement's' was composed for the 2023 Royal Northern College of Music Brass Band Festival in memory of internationally renowned conductor and composer Bramwell Tovey.

Bramwell was the Artistic Director of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain throughout the composer's 7 years as a tenor horn player in the NYBBGB and the hymn tune 'St Clement's (no. 82 in the 120 Hymns for Brass Band book) was used by Bramwell to conclude every course. This setting of 3 verses of the hymn tune 'The Day Thou Gavest. was premiered by the RNCM Brass Band in January 2023.
