On most farms, a ram that won’t mate with ewes doesn’t have much of a future. Michael Stücke decided to give those rams somewhere else to go.

Stücke, an openly gay sheep farmer, learned that some rams show no interest in females and can be culled because they’re considered useless for breeding. So he began asking other farmers to send those animals to him instead.

The result is an entire flock of gay rams. And according to Stücke, once they’re together, “a lot of action happens.” 🐏

Their wool now has a purpose, too. In 2023, Stücke founded Rainbow Wool with his husband, Johan, and friend Nadia Leytes, turning wool from the flock into products that help support LGBTQ+ causes.

The project also carries a deeply personal meaning. Stücke created Rainbow Wool with his husband, Johan, and friend Nadia Leytes. Johan died after a battle with cancer, but the project they helped build together continues.

A flock of sheep once considered worthless simply because they wouldn’t reproduce, now being cared for exactly as they are.
