volunteer Callum ( ) and professional Sound Archivist David Govier discuss The Azimuth Project, as part of the wider Piccadilly Radio Archive project at Central Library, and the importance of digitising aging media formats such as reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes.

With the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Manchester Libraries Trust , over 1,600 Piccadilly Radio shows have been preserved in digital format since January 2025. Visitors are welcome to explore these shows on the Library’s Sound + Vision listening pods and visit the Piccadilly Radio 261 exhibition, on till 31st December.

The Azimuth Project extended this work by prioritising Stu Allan’s legendary Bus ‘Diss shows, as well as digitising recorded Manchester pirate radio shows and rare hip-hop mixtapes from the Greater Manchester Hip Hop Archive.

Preserving Manchester Hip Hop history: one cassette at a time🎧

The Azimuth Project is ensuring rare recordings aren’t lost to time, including .dj’s legendary Bus ‘Diss. First broadcast in the late 80s on Piccadilly Radio, the show gave many Manchester Hip Hop fans their first exposure to the music and culture emerging across the pond.

In collaboration with and , the Azimuth Project invited young people attending Unity Radio’s MCC Youth & Play funded programme to learn the digitisation process and shine a light on a part of the city’s musical history that’s often overlooked.
