🌏 Peat on Earth is a UK/Malaysia poetic and visual collaboration between poets Matt Sowerby and Kimchi Lai, and filmmakers Studio 91 Media and Factual TV.

The project uses spoken word films to explore the beauty, biodiversity, and cultural importance of peatland habitats in both countries. Supported by our Connections Through Culture grants, the films seek to challenge perceptions and reframe how these landscapes are understood.

Some news as we get closer to finishing the films and showing them to the public!

Day 1 of filming complete ✅

and have spent the day at 's Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve, immersing themselves in the habitat, writing poetry and capturing footage. By the end of the project we'll produce five spoken word films, and our Malaysian co-producers will create five more.

Earlier this week .exploring and had their own habitat immersion at a peat forest near Kuala Lumpur. We've been comparing notes over WhatsApp and it's been amazing to realise how many similarities there are between these two very different habitats, both with peat in common.

There's more to film in Cumbria tomorrow. We'll keep you posted on how the project is progressing. 🌍

🌿 PEAT ON EARTH… 🌱

We have some exciting news to announce! We’ve been selected to receive a Connections Through Culture grant from Arts – British Council / British Council Malaysia to co-produce a collaborative body of work between the UK and Malaysia that focuses on the topic of climate change.

Work has already begun on our project which is a collaboration with Malaysian filmmaker Factual TV and us. Our project will result in ten poems and spoken word films written by local poets Matt Sowerby and Kimchi Lai both highlighting the importance of bogs and peat swamps in both countries.

Bogs and peat swamps are often seen negatively, with terms like “swamped” or “bogged down“ giving them a bad reputation. However, these biodiverse habitats have an important, planet-saving story to share and deserve celebrating.

The star of the UK films will be Foulshaw Moss, one of Cumbria Wildlife Trust's flagship nature reserves. Ben will spend two days there in May with Matt the poet, immersing themselves in the habitat, capturing visuals and gathering inspiration for the poetry.

We’re off to a cracking start with this project and can’t wait to get even more stuck in over the next few months!! We’ll keep you updated with our progress - watch this space for news about a public exhibition both in the UK and Kuala Lumpur coming later this year.
