In memory of WW2 Spitfire flying ace Sqn Ldr Allan Scott

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air . . .

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark nor even eagle flew –

And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

– Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee

Adrian Warburton

Great Luqa Harrier

Salute the man since no praise is too high For Adrian Warburton's deeds in the sky.

From nineteen forty and ever since then This sixty-nine squadron man amongst men Has bravely flown o'er the bluest of seas Piloting Maryland aircraft with ease. Flying from Malta to spy from the air, Probing reconnaissance flights everywhere Enemy forces are grouped to wage war From Southern Europe to Africa's shore.

Cast in the role of a far-seeing eye His acts have plagued Rommel's lines of supply:

In three years flying from Luqa airfield Bringing home pictures of harbours that shield Italian battleships anchored in port, Dead scared to sail as a convoy es**rt: Fearing that Malta's great Luqa harrier Would dog their course despite any barrier.

Indeed this all-purpose man of air space Must surely rank as a super air ace. Soaring to film war from high altitude, Gliding through cloudbanks when hotly pursued, Evading Luftwaffe fighter attacks, Shooting down planes over Apennine tracks, Obtaining strategic intelligence Considered vital for Malta's defence. Salute the man since no praise is too high For Adrian Warburton's deeds in the sky.

JOHN SNOOK 1943 (then a 19 years old LAC).

In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
