A very special day indeed
we’re showing a short film Ridy and I made with Refugee Tales, The Walker’s Tale, at the Hackney Picturehouse in London.

The most unique 5 days walking arts festival starts in London, bringing together the communities associated with the spectacular Refugee Tales community of walkers, artists, people with lived experience, writers and casually many more groups of people, such as invested politicians.

Refugee Tales celebrates 10 years of groundbreaking epic work. If you’re not joining us today I leave you with a video from the very first project I did with Refugee Tales via Commapress.

“The Legend of the Looms is a love letter to folk poetry, traditions of both my homes of Bahrain and North West England. I’m constantly struck by the fact I come from a north western village in Bahrain with a tradition of textiles, politics and poetry and live now in Manchester with its tradition of textiles, politics and poetry. The poem, film and installation started as an attempt to draw these disparate threads into one tapestry. I invite audiences to take it as the start of a conversation that includes their own stories of family, art and weaving.”

Ali was first commissioned by the Arab British Centre over a year ago as part of our As We Are, Might Have Been and Could Be visual arts strand, which focuses on developing the practices and careers of Arab-identifying artists in the UK. We’ve loved getting to know Ali and to see his vision take shape in this work.

Join us this Saturday 1 Feb at the Legend of the Looms Open Day at to see him weave poetry and culture, and to meet him in person!
