Some very successful authors will be appearing at festivals and events around Britain this coming month. If you’re looking for inspiration and professional tips from some of the masters of their trade, here are some dates you might want to mark on the calendar.

Birmingham Literature Festival: 4-14 October

Writing a novel masterclass with Richard Skinner One-to-One Fiction Surgeries with publishers and editors.

Cheltenham Literature Festival: 5th-14th October

Creative writing workshops

Frederick Forsyth - Day of the Jackal and too many more to mention - and Frank Gardner - author of best-selling Ultimatum - talking about writing edge-of-the-seat thrillers.

Liverpool Literary Festival: 19th-21st October

The mighty Val McDermid talking about writing crime fiction. She has sold 15 million books!

Manchester Literary Festival: 5th-21st October

The great Pat Barker talking about her new novel The Silence of the Girls

Best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith - The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency - he has sold
over 40 million books, translated into 46 languages! and many, many others.

Best wishes from the Cillian Editing Services team.

A novel is a relationship, a place outside of time where both reader and writer are challenged and validated, stretched and rewarded.

Sorry to hear that TI Media, the new owners of 100-year-old print-veteran Women’s Weekly, appear to be bringing in a policy of bullying their writers. Not only have they cut their short-story fee from £150 to £100, but new contracts will specify that authors sign away all rights, current and future, to their work. So that £100 is not only a fairly paltry sum, it’s a one-off, once-only, never-to-be-repeated paltry sum.
Here at Cillian Press we know that publishers need writers as much as writers need publishers. It’s a partnership, not a chain-gang!

Nick Drnaso’s "Sabrina" is the first graphic novel to be long-listed for the Man Booker Prize. Probably not the last. Good luck from the Cillian Press team!

Thank you to Michael Ondaatje for thanking “small presses everywhere.”

Happy 50th birthday to the Booker Prize from the Cillian Press team, and good luck to the authors shortlisted for the Golden Booker!
