Leitz, you say?

We’re buzzing to showcase our new nano primes from the cinematic giants Leitz. The Leitz Hektor’s are a modern throwback to their roots decades ago, with a subtle but present vintage character and lovely purple-green flairs.

Nano primes - such as Cooke SP3’s and our cine-modded Olympus OM’s - are more sought after than ever with the Ronin 4D being so popular. But, similarly, the Leitz Hektor’s being E-mount means our friends love to stick them on a Sony FX6 to raise their imaging that bit more.

They’re super lightweight, look great, and have a gold e-mount. Which is fancy. We like fancy things.

In this post I want to show a glimpse into my TV prep process and how I applied it to Buccaneers, which was a 2 stage prep for block 1 and block 3.
I started the show with and I crafted the look for season 2 as a whole, which took shape in our eps, 1 and 4. For the 3rd block, eps 5 & 6 with , we kept the same style, but I added small details to tell the story of those eps.
My proposal for series 2 was to give the show a mature look that reflected Nan’s character journey and new status as a Dutches. The brief from the showrunner was to keep the look bright and inviting, but give it depth and texture. For me this mature look was shown through the soft quality of light, the contrast and the shadow detail. I brought in references from Dutch paintings, as well as hand picked film references for specific scenes, from films such as Atonement or even Wuthering Heights.
Will and I page turned our eps in detail; he also had a shot list from before I joined the project, but we were open on shot ideas based on the location and final blocking. It was very collborative, trying to make the show as cinematic, throwing in zooms and dolly movement to be playful and express the above mentioned status.
I make my own breakdown for each ep on keynote or google slides, with shot ideas/refs, pics from location, details of each scene, call sheets, shots captured at the location scout, lighting intentions, shots the director might want to achieve, equipment needed or any thought i have on the story beat.

On Buccaneers I wanted to give the actors, director and the cameras as much space, particularly because we shot 2 cameras, so I lit thru the window almost exclusively. More to come on prep, pls send qs if curious.

That was a week that was. Two dramas and an independent feature locked and loaded out of Glasgow. Thankyou to all of the and crew involved for making a very hectic week run that little bit smoother. Not sure what we imagined the future would look like when we opened our office in Scotland 5 years ago but can’t quite believe this is where we are now. We love what we do, love the people we work with that make it so and love that we do it across the north of England and Scotland. Onwards!!
