🚨🗣️ Michael Carrick on Manchester United competing with richer Premier League clubs, the lack of sales, their recent form, long-term progress and Everton:

On competing despite rivals spending more:

“We certainly feel we can compete. The challenge is getting the right dynamics, getting the right balance and getting the right group together.

“The amount of money can be important, but it doesn’t always have to be the answer. It’s up to us to do the work and get the best out of the group.

“We’ve strengthened the group from what we had last season and finished the season really strong. We know where we want to get to and we’re really positive that we can.”

On making few senior sales:

“No, to be honest, I wasn’t surprised. We had a really good foundation of eight months or so where we know what we can do and who brings what to the group.

“We wanted to be stronger, so that was the focus. Whatever we needed to do to stay stronger, whether that was players going or keeping certain players, ultimately we want to keep getting better.”

On United’s recent Premier League form:

“You’ve got to strive to win. We expect to win. That’s not arrogance, that’s where we want to be.

“The boys know what it’s taken to put that run together. We need to do that an awful lot more this season, but we’ve strengthened the group and we feel good about what’s possible.”

On the team’s long-term progress:

“There’s a freshness around the group, an excitement and, I’ll be honest, there’s a hunger and a feeling of wanting to achieve something.

“We’ve got to keep that and grow it. We’ve got to bounce back from setbacks, know what we can do when we’re at our best and stay at that level for as long as we can.”

On Everton’s atmosphere:

“We’re certainly aware of all sorts of things around different clubs, but ultimately for me and the players, it comes down to preparing with what we do on the pitch.

“Emotionally, whatever way it goes, you’ve got to be able to cope with it and make the most of situations. We know we’re going into an atmosphere that historically is a tough game.”

🚨🗣️ Michael Carrick on Manchester United’s future recruitment and Kobbie Mainoo’s development:

On whether defence will be the main focus next summer:

“It’s not always as simple as that. There’s the evolution of trying to improve things all the time.

“How the season goes, form, injuries, who’s looking good and what the future looks like — there’s a lot that goes into it.

“We’ve obviously got a clear idea of what we want to look like coming through this summer and then a little bit further down the line. We’ll see how the season goes and what we need to develop.”

On Mainoo’s competition for places:

“I think the competition is a positive thing. It’s not necessarily one player or the other. It’s about having a strong group.

“Kobbie made big strides last season, finished the season really strongly and played ever so well last week again. You can see his development and how much he’s improving certain aspects of his game.

“He wants to learn, he’s hungry to learn and wants more all the time, which is great.”

On Mainoo’s potential this season:

“Kobbie can have another big season for sure. He’s come back great, really has come back great.

“You can see him growing around the group and in training. His personality is maturing all the time and he’s still so young. There’s loads to still come from him.”

On improving Mainoo defensively:

“We’re constantly working with all the boys individually. It’s not about lecturing Kobbie at all, but letting him play, letting him express himself and letting him do what he’s good at.

“He’s got some amazing attributes that we want to use. There’s definitely the improvement side, trying to help him.

“The great thing is that he wants to learn. He takes things on board really well, and that’s going to give him a great chance to fulfil his potential, which obviously he’s got an awful lot of.”

🚨🗣️ Diogo Dalot on Manchester United’s squad and expectations this season:

“We are creating a good atmosphere within the group, a strong squad, and I believe we can handle this schedule [4 competitions] and accumulate these matches while always having good options within the squad.”

On the expectations after last season:

“I think the big advantage we had from last season was that we finished the campaign leaving a very positive image, creating expectations among the fans and also within ourselves that this year we can compete.”

🚨🗣️ Diogo Dalot on the biggest challenge of being a Manchester United player:

“I believe the biggest challenge of being a Manchester United player is managing expectations, especially because of the noise that comes from outside towards the inside, rather than the other way around.

“We always try to keep that noise away and separate from what we do every day. But it can also be difficult, especially for players who don’t have much experience at this club, to know how to deal with this situation.”

🚨🗣️ David Ornstein on Manchester United’s transfer window and the areas they still need to strengthen:

“United fans might have expected them to bring in more bodies. They’ve got Champions League football and need more depth in more positions.

“But they haven’t got an unlimited flow of cash. They’ve got to live within relative means and are aiming for a more sustainable model under Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

“Last season was all about the front line, which I think they invested in pretty well. This season, it was the midfield and they’ve come out of it in good shape.

“They did want to recruit a left-back if possible. That’s why they looked at Lewis Hall, Myles Lewis-Skelly and some options on deadline day, maybe even a loan possibility for Rayan Aït-Nouri.

“But they’ll probably have to look into other windows for other departments.

“Michael Carrick said he’s pleased, so let’s judge them once we see them play a bit more.”
