Dennis Soares owns two distinctions - being the self-proclaimed tallest musician in Waikiki at 6’9, and being the only artist on the compilation to contribute two songs. Born in 1954, Dennis has recorded close to 200 albums, most of which were created with his long time partner Christy, whom he met in 1986 at San Joaquin Delta College.

“Run Around in Circles” was taken from his first self-released LP “Surf Over The Reef”, which was recorded in 1975 with the help of a few friends. The album’s title comes from a book of the same name written by a woman named Carla whom he met during one of his performances while he was a pillar in the Waikiki live music scene. The album was inspired by both his own life on the big island at the time, as well as some of the characters featured in Carla’s book.

The second song “One World”, created with his wife Christy, was featured on a scarcely pressed 7” on Elation Relations - a label run by Dennis to release a variety of recordings on different formats in the 1980s. Released 10 years apart, these songs exemplify the island feel on Pipe Dreams, and it was both challenging and rewarding process to single out two songs from an oeuvre that spans decades.

Meri-Lynn and Joseph Britz are a couple from the Florida Keys. Pipe Dreams features their song “My Island Home,” originally released on their micro-pressed album South Of Jewfish Creek in 1977. Recorded in ‘Studio B’ (better known as the second bedroom) on a 4-track Teac with the help of the neighborhood dogs, cats, kids and low-flying airplanes, the record was a community effort to pay homage to their home in the Florida Keys - a string of small islands stretching off the southern tip of Florida.

“My Island Home” captures the Pipe Dreams spirit perfectly, a simple and sincere song made to document a particular place, time, and way of life.

Meri-Lynn and Joe still live and play music together in the Keys today.

Ossie Parker Jr., a son of the soil, was born in Fox Town on the northwestern end of the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas. He taught himself how to play the guitar at the age of ten. “It was my closest friend” says Ossie, who began entertaining at the Treasure Cay Beach Hotel in December of 1969. Since then he has traveled around to most of the other resorts on the island to showcase his musical talents, and has even toured towns and cities in the United States while representing the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism.

“I am trying to bring my audience a new style of island music”, he says. “One that speaks of love, dreams and contentment”. Ossie’s love and feeling is certainly felt in the way he presents his songs. They are sung in a tone of voice that is strong, yet mellow to the ear, and soothing to the mind, creating an overall feeling of warmth and relaxation. All of Ossie’s songs are originals, and each one will bring a little tranquility and happiness in to the moment you choose to listen to them.

On Pipe Dreams we’ve selected “Peace of Mind” off of Ossie’s Calypso-Lounge album “Sailing”, which was recorded at Jalex Studios in Palm Beach, Florida in the late 70s. One of the first songs we selected for the compilation, it serves as an honest ode, yearning for the freedom and individuality associated with island living. Ossie unfortunately passed away earlier this year, but was excited to know his music was being reissued to a new generation of listeners. Kick back and have a Kalik for him.

Rick Sharp is a lifelong surfer, musician, and artist from Santa Barbara, California.

In the late ’70s, he began trading his artwork for recording time at Condor Ridge Studios, perched high in the mountains north of Santa Barbara. With access to state-of-the-art equipment, he recorded his self-titled Earth Song album - a collection of cosmic rock and AOR.

Rick continued recording throughout the early ’80s, releasing two more albums, Distant Shores and Restless Heart, and even contributing music to a surf film around the same period.

Our favorite from this era is “Caribbean Woman,” taken from Distant Shores. The album moves through a number of styles, but this one lands somewhere between bossa nova and lounge. There’s a cheeky lightheartedness to it that felt perfectly at home among the island-life sounds featured on Disc 2 of Pipe Dreams.

More than four years in the making, Tiki Shack Recording Studios AKA Smiling C Records & Mike Patricola present Pipe Dreams — a compilation of sidewalk surf bands, tropical troubadours, and soothing sounds from just beyond the reef.

Compiled by Mike Patricola, Pipe Dreams is the culmination of years spent exchanging obscure recordings, pursuing a shared feeling, and uncovering a sub-genre of overlooked songs that could be woven into a story of surf, snorkel, and sun. Drawn from Patricola’s collection, the compilation aims to capture the feeling of endless summer, and serves as an ode to the freedom of island living: Bikini-shaped sunburns, coconut stands closed due to perfect swells, slack guitars, perpetual sunsets, guppies darting through shallow water, and afternoons spent face-down in the sand.

Spanning the late 1970s through the mid 1980s, Pipe Dreams gathers forgotten pop, lounge, soft rock, AOR, disco, and private-press oddities into a time capsule that seeks to epitomize an era that existed before life became mediated by screens. One in which technology was more naive and society was less reliant upon it. Time moved slower, people were better able to connect with their surroundings, and the dream of moving to a coastal utopia felt more attainable.

Pressed on vinyl in a collector’s edition deluxe die-cut, spot-glossed gatefold jacket featuring artwork by our man Charles Bals, and cover photo “Breaking Wave” by Lex Thompson. Limited to 500 copies.

Dennis & Karen — Up Down (SC7-01)

Limited edition 7” vinyl — 100 copies only.

Two previously unreleased recordings drawn from the personal archives of Karen Mantero & Dennis Genovese. Beginning in early-1960s New Jersey, the duo quietly recorded together across four decades, documenting an evolving private world of homespun psychedelia and experimental pop.

After featuring their song “Get Free” (released under the name Karen Ghee) on our recent compilation Neon Castle, Dennis entrusted us with the keys to his tape vault. Inside were dozens of forgotten recordings spanning nearly forty years.

One track immediately stopped us in our tracks: “Up Down” (1971) — a candlelit swirl of orchestral psych folk tinged with arpeggiated harp, eerie electronics, and dreamy vocal harmonies. Like a lost session by The United States of America with Trish Keenan-esque vocals.

Paired with it is “It’s A New Day, Jodi” (1966), an earlier glimpse into Karen & Dennis’ partnership: fragile homemade psych pop filled with youthful warmth and melancholy. Potentially the earliest surviving recording by the pair.

Together, these recordings capture two distinct moments in the evolution of an overlooked songwriting duo — from tender mid-60s pop psych to exploratory early-70s experimentation.
