I'm no journalist, and the photos won't really tell the scene. Let me attempt to recount my version of events at my first ever truck race.
Before the weekend at Brands I hadn't watched any truck racing live, I had heard of it and knew of it's existence - so I set to work brushing up on the racing and the standings, had a look at a few Youtube videos from BARC official channels.
Whilst it looked all good fun on the videos it really didn't capture the immensity of truck racing.
You are stood at the top of a hill, on a very stormy day. It's raining sideways and soaked down to the very fibres of your being. To top it off there's a strong breeze to really chill the bone. You're stood at turn 2 (Druids) which if you're unfamiliar is a long right hand hairpin at the top of a very steep crest. The safety emerges followed by 20 pedigree race trucks over the crest - christ those are absolutely enormous. Some (Bint Racing) sporting a particularly aggressive design. If it was in my mirror I would be immediately changing lane.
Safety truck pulls in, the race is on. An accumulated 100 tonnes and 20000 horsepowers (and who knows how many torques) come stampeding over the crest, in basically monsoon conditions, you feel the vibration through your feet and the rumble in your chest as they round the corner, locking the brakes and sliding into each other, trucks trying to get the power down and flicking the tail out and spraying the spectators, and theyre just about round off down to the next corner - mostly still intact.
It's basically this - all day. Complete and total chaos. I've never known a race have a 3 truck pile up, have bodywork all over the track, and then they just carry on like nothing has happened. Topped off only by needing a whole recovery truck to pickup up someones bonnet at the end of the session. Great times. Love it.
Still new to truck racing so if you recognise any trucks please tag the teams/drivers
