Dementia singing group members meet Tony Christie

Members of a Frome dementia singing group met veteran singer Tony Christie recently when he performed at the Cheese and Grain.

Organisers of Songs for the Memory, Debby Webster and Janet Knowles, along with group members, met the singer during his visit to Frome last month as part of his Great Farewell tour.

“Tony Christie was magnificent; it was a masterclass thoroughly enjoyed by everyone from the group who also went,” said Debby.

Father Christmas set for fundraising journey around Frome

The Frome Rotary and Lions Santa Float will be making its way around the town and surrounding areas to raise funds for local causes in the run-up to Christmas.

The float, which has been travelling around Frome at Christmas for over 50 years, will start on Monday 1st December and travel around the town with volunteers before finishing its rounds on 22nd December.

Frome Rotary Club President Richard Lines said, “Frome Rotary Club is delighted to be heading out during December to help Santa as he brings joy to all Frome residents. Santa has also allowed us the night off on 3rd December, the anniversary of our club charter, as we hold a Gala Event at Orchardleigh to celebrate past and present members who have supported the Frome community for 100 years.”

All about Bath at next society lecture

The next lecture by the Frome Society will focus on Bath as a World Heritage Site, recognised as one of the ‘Great Spa Towns of Europe.’

The talk will be held on Saturday 29th November, delivered by Paul Simons in the Assembly Rooms, at the rear of the Frome Memorial Theatre.

Organisers say, “In July 2021, UNESCO selected Bath, along with eleven other towns, to form a new multi-site inscription of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, but it took ten years of research and documentation to get there. In 2011, Paul was appointed Secretary General of the UNESCO project for the Great Spa Towns of Europe and during the following ten years steered the project to achievement."

Share Shop explores fresh ideas to reopen

The Share Shop team are exploring ways of re-opening in the town, following its closure last year.

Share Shop Trustee Cllr Anne Hills said at Frome’s full town council meeting last month that the team are exploring ways which the service could ‘come out of hibernation.’ The shop enables residents to borrow some of the 800 items available, including arts and crafts, DIY and decorating, tools, household items, leisure and camping equipment, kitchen items and games and more.

“We have got lots of irons in the fire,” said Cllr Anne Hills. “One of the possible ways of us coming out of a hibernation is to have a distributed service around the town, so different categories of items in different locations so that we start back in a small way, in a controlled way.”

Storytelling at Frome pub

A local trio of traditional story lovers are calling in tellers and listeners for a gathering this month.

Frome Storytelling Circle is a home for myth, wonder and the listening of traditional oral stories and folk tales. They will be hosting a storytelling event upstairs at The Three Swans pub on King Street on Thursday 27th November.

Organisers, Lara, Jed and Steph are inviting residents to bring a story to tell or just come and listen in a relaxed and welcoming space.

Lara said, “My childhood love of tales of fantasy, myth and jokes drew me towards exploring the power and shared pleasure of stories. I have used storytelling in my work with adults with learning disabilities and with young people with communication difficulties and enjoy sharing stories in a community setting. I’ve also had the pleasure of training with traditional storyteller Shonaleigh Cumbers.”

Frome’s Cara Dillon brings winter show to town

One of the most celebrated Irish folk singers, Cara Dillon, will once again bring her much-loved Christmas tour to Frome.

Cara Dillon will perform Upon a Winter’s Night at the Cheese and Grain on Thursday 18th December, with a collection of modern and ancient carols performed with her Celtic band.

Cara, who has been a Frome resident for nearly 24 years and is a patron of the Cheese and Grain, said, “I’ve been lucky enough to perform at the Cheese and Grain many, many times. I think this year must be the fifth or sixth time I’ll be performing my Christmas show there and I just cannot wait.

“There will be so many familiar faces in the audience, which makes it feel very special. For me, it really is a show like no other.”

Local campaigners continue work for Palestinian aid

In the last 18 months, the Frome Friends of Palestine group has raised over £33,600 for humanitarian action and aid in Palestine.

The group says the funds have been raised through the efforts of thousands of local residents, including Palestinian, Jewish and wider Middle Eastern communities.

A spokesperson for the group said, “Events have involved fundraising, talks from international experts and journalists on a wide range of topics, plus family-friendly, peaceful protests.

“Beyond the funds raised, these community gatherings provide a crucial space for residents to collectively process their deep distress and grief over the ongoing genocide. The opportunity to express empathy and solidarity has offered significant respite and mutual support. "
