The Royal Air Force is expected to be on heightened alert tonight as preparations are made to intercept an aircraft approaching from the Arctic region.

The aircraft is believed to possess a mix of “good and bad” intelligence-gathering capabilities.

The alert follows an incident around this time last year, when RAF Typhoon jets es**rted a Lapland-registered aircraft flying in from the Arctic across major UK cities. At the time, the pilot was reportedly in a very “festive” state, raising concerns given the substantial amount of cargo onboard.

A repeat of that scenario is anticipated this evening.

An MoD spokesperson, Christopher Cringle, said:
“Interception forms a key part of the RAF’s role. Any aircraft entering or approaching UK airspace must be identified and confirmed. Although this particular craft appears at the same time each year and we have a strong idea of who is involved, no risks are taken.”

During the previous incident, Ministry of Defence satellites equipped with infrared sensors tracked the aircraft, with a clear heat signature detected from one animal’s distinctive red nose. RAF aircraft then proceeded to es**rt the flight over cities, towns and villages across the UK.
