The Middlesbrough Empire
In our humble town this man really needs no introduction to those that lived and survived the 90s & early naughties.
His residence Bar Fresco was regarded by many during the height of the uks clubbing scene as the bar that changed the mold & made late bars trendy.
The bar itself was nothing, pretty s**t stuck under a bridge.. but once inside something hit you, & that something was Mike Johnson mixing vinyl on three 1210s.
His record collection & mixing technique was legendary in the Boro focusing on a total new style that was beginning to sweep the bars and club backrooms, a mix of house, disco and generally anything funky. Tracks that step forward 30 years are today played by all the club classic brands and DJs whilst still being remixed by producers in the scene.
For those that witnessed it, you enjoyed it, but at the time did you understand how special it was. Probably not !
Mike played pretty much everywhere the Onion, the Arena etc etc & became a firm favourite at The Manor Born events which themselves hold legend status for a Sunday night. Things were so different back then 🤨
Nowadays you see Mike near the Boro rarely at gigs such as Hardwick Live / & he’s played a few times for us once at Disgraceland Baker St & once in a joint collab with HOUSE IS A FEELING at The Dickens
Honestly get down for this one if you like to shake your soul 👯♀️🪩🎶⚡️
