I wasn’t going to post this picture 🫣
Because the potbelly was potbellying.
But then I thought… ah, forget it. Let me face my truth before it faces me in public.
See ehn, if you had seen me before, like old pictures from Naija, you’d swear I was immune to fat. I used to be slim like wire. I used to mock people with belly. Life said no wahala. Come abroad.
Since I landed in this obodo oyibo, everything changed. I don’t know if it's the cold or the food or the stress or the shift life. But somehow, somehow, one day I just looked down and boom. Pregnancy. But the sad part is, no baby is coming. Just roundness and regret 😩
Let me explain how it started.
When you get here, life no dey follow you play.
You’re either working back to back, chasing shift, or you’re in bed recovering from chasing shift. No time to cook proper food. No time to portion anything. Before you know it, kebab here, chicken and chips there, Pepsi and Fanta for morale. Junk becomes the new normal. You eat at midnight, then sleep like a log. Rinse and repeat.
You don’t even know you’re getting fat until someone you love says
“Ah ah, are you inheriting your father's stomach” Is it inheritance or survival
They used to say potbelly means you’re enjoying life. Now it just means you need to visit a doctor.
Let me confess. I’ve been to the gym twice. The gym didn’t sack me. I sacked myself. I quit.
WhyBecause who gym epp when there’s shift available. Money is calling and I can’t hear dumbbells right now 💼🏃♂️💨
But lately, I’ve been looking at my old clothes and wondering how I went from slim fit to struggling zip. Clothes I used to slay with are now looking at me like “boss, respect yourself”
So I’ve made up my mind again to fight back. I’m entering phase one of Bring Back My body. No surgery. Just vibes and hope.
This post is not for pity. It’s for solidarity. If you’re in abroad and your belly is doing steady inflation, I see you. If you’ve ever picked shawarma over salad, don’t worry, you’re not alone. If you promised to start gym next week and six months have passed, we move.
This potbelly might be mine now… but one day, it will be history. Till then, enjoy the view 😅📸
