•Oba Ewuare I developed the Edaiken title for the oldest son to clearly establish the lineage of the obaship. One oral history in Edo dates this development of the Edaiken title to a situation in the city of Uselu. The chief of Uselu, Iken, had become an ally to Ewuare. At one point, another city was revolting against Ewuare's rule and Iken mobilized an army to end the revolt. Before embarking on the war, Iken did not have child to rule Uselu in his absence, so Ewuare sent his oldest son Kuoboyuwa to serve in the town until the war was over. Iken died in the war and since he had no heir, Kuoboyuwa became the ruler. This incident created a clear succession to the oldest son of the king with the title Edaiken derived from the incident. - “A Short History of Benin” by Egharevba, Jacob (1960), Ibadan University Press.
