Next on the bench was a Technics cassette deck from the very early 80’s. It wouldn’t play a tape and it turned out to be the rubber reel idler, a bit of a clean up had it as good as new. What a nice machine though, both the capstan and reel motors were direct drive, the only belt in there was for the tape counter!

Quad power amp in for repair and service, there was a constant background hum, the main filter caps were well in spec so I moved on to the amp modules where I found several caps way off value and a couple were open circuit. I’ve had to order a couple of them so have put it to one side for now.

It seems I'm a tree harvester technician now 😳
The machine wouldn't start, I found some high resistance across some of the fuse holders, I cleaned all the relay holders, it also looked like voltage had been tracking across two adjacent pieces of print so I scraped the board back in that area to get rid of the charring, I cleaned all the wood and dirt from the panel as some of that was probably conductive when it got damp...and by some miracle it did the trick

A couple of Fender amps completed today, I fitted the new reverb tank to the Blues Junior, it also had an issue with the input jack, not a common one, or easy to find online so I stripped it down and cleaned up the tarnished contacts.
The Frontman had been waiting for an output ic, I fitted that and soldered up all the jack sockets which looked like they were about to fall out of the panel. Both amps now sounding good and awaiting collection.

A Samsung cd / radio / cassette, it wouldn’t read a disc and tape 2 occasionally wouldn’t play a tape. I thought I’d start with the cd as it was the most likely to be unrepairable, which I initially thought it would be as the laser wasn’t readily available, by luck I found one in China (again), it even worked, so now on to the tape deck. I found the take up idler wasn’t always clicking into position as it didn’t move freely, what a fiddly job that was, I had to remove the auto stop arm, followed by the take up reel and clutch then get all the springs and levers back in the right place once I’d dealt with the idler arm. All working now!

That's a completed repair on the Onkyo system, sometimes the cd tray would open and sometimes it wouldn't, it was absolutely impossible to fault find with the cd mech in situ, all I could do was remove it and have an educated guess at what it might be, the first thing checked was the the tray position switch, I've had a lot of trouble with those over the years, it turned out to be ok though. Next thing was to put a power supply on the tray motor to see how the mechanism behaved mechanically, bingo...the motor wouldn't budge without a helping hand. So a new motor was fitted, along with the loading belt and it's now on test but looking good.

Lots of Fenders in today, one Blues Junior with a fried output transformer, another Blues Junior with a missing reverb tank and a Frontman with an output IC that’s passing dc voltage to the speaker…not ideal!
Then there’s the regular stuff…an Onkyo cd system with an intermittent tray motor, part on order for that one!

The strangest looking laser I've ever seen 😆, imagine the disappointment of waiting weeks for an almost unobtainable laser to arrive from China and this is in the box. To be honest it hasn't been a great week for China when you consider the two fake semiconductors they supplied me with, these are all parts that can't be got from anywhere else by the way.

That’s the Samsung HiFi up and running, just a loading belt on the cd mech and a set of drive belts for the tape decks, luckily my measurements for the belts were spot on, what a pain to fit though, especially on the cd mech. Not really known for their HiFi but I think this system sounds quite nice. A good clean up and it can go home!
