The Austrian composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) was one of the greatest composing child prodigies in history. His keyboard style was highly personal and fully formed from the start, yet he seems to have had hardly any instruction on the instrument. Apart from a few lessons when he was five years old (not from an eminent teacher, but a needy relative), he seems to have been entirely self-taught.

Raphael Wallfisch talks about the two great works for cello and orchestra by Bloch, 'Schelomo' and 'Voice in the Wilderness'.
These "are amongst my very favourite to play. I grew up listening to the wonderful recording by Emanuel Feuermann and the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Stokowski, and long before I could play the piece knew every note from memory! Bloch is able to encapsulate the fervent nobility, grandeur, tragedy, and joy of the Jewish legend with unequalled pathos and skill...It is of great significance that I have recorded these amazing pieces with my dear son Benjamin. We would like to dedicate the recording to the many members of our family that perished in the Holocaust." Raphael Wallfisch, 2013

CRD 3551 - Letters from Scandinavia - Joanna Harries and Sholto Kynoch

"Letters from Scandinavia is, I hope, an adventure... It certainly has been for me in creating it. It began with a chance stumbling on Mary Wollstonecraft’s Letters
Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway & Denmark, written on the cusp of the nineteenth century, at a time when most of the rest of Europe was almost entirely ignorant of the ‘wild north’. I soon discovered a treasure trove of historic travel writing about Scandinavia, which I duly devoured." Joanna Harries

RTS4431 - June Christy, Sings Something Cool, A Centenary Tribute

Available now from all major retailers and digital platforms
🎼🎧

The ‘cool’ Miss June Christy is presented in a fabulous centenary collection of her best music from the Stan Kenton and Pete Rugolo years. When Illinois-born Shirley Luster (1925-1990) became the cool-voiced jazz singer June Christy she also became one of the leaders of the hip vocal school founded by Anita O’Day, whom she replaced with Stan Kenton. Going solo in 1947, she was a regular poll-winner yet remains one of the most undervalued singers of the post-swing era. She was blessed with a wholesome but peculiarly sensuous voice, and a bright, bubbling personality glowed through all her performances; effective in uptempo swingers, yet also adept at reflective ballads.

NMP1251 - J.S. Bach The Six Keyboard Partitas, A New Performing Edition by Vladimir Feltsman

"This edition presents the score of the Six Partitas as found in the Bach-Gesellschaft Ausgabe, published by Breitkopf und Hartel in 1853. The score itself is unaltered; performing suggestions are added in light grey. Bach did not use such terms as “ritenuto,” “meno mosso,” “piu mosso,” “accelerando,” “crescendo,” and “diminuendo,” and they are not used here." Vladimir Feltsman

The Yale Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1965 by a group of students who saw the growing potential for a large orchestral ensemble to thrive on campus. With a spirit for promoting new music and performing underrepresented composers alongside works of the standard Western canon, the orchestra has become a destination for students who wish to perform orchestral music at the conservatory level while taking advantage of all that Yale - a liberal-arts institution - has to offer.
