A milestone reached for Piatti Quartet and violist Zahra Benyounes for their recording of Vaughan Williams’ Phantasy Quintet released in January this year as part of their album Phantasy.

Listen now lnk.to/PiattiPhantasy

The Phantasy Quintet was commissioned in 1912 by businessman and chamber music patron Walter Cobbett. Inspired by 16th and 17th century works for viol, in 1905 Cobbett established a ‘Phantasy’ (his spelling) competition for British composers. The first prize was awarded to the tragically short-lived William Hurlstone.

Thomas Bowes’ lifelong relationship with Elgar’s music is present in every bow stroke of his upcoming album. At 14, he painted the portrait that has now become the album cover, and much of his professional life that followed has been spent as a violin soloist and concertmaster in the very studio that Elgar opened in 1931 – Abbey Road Studios Studio 1.

Stay tuned for new music from Thomas Bowes this Friday.

'What’s often not talked about in the quest to become a somebody in the world of music is the casualty rate'

In classical music, attention gravitates towards youthful virtuosos and glittering careers. But some of the art form's most valuable contributions come from gifted musicians whose talents flourish beyond the spotlight, as violinist Thomas Bowes examines. Link in comments 🎻 Rubicon Classics

‘My relationship with Elgar’s music, and particularly the Violin concerto, goes way back to my teens. And in about 1974, probably to make sense of these feelings, a rather dreamy 14-year-old made the picture on the cover of the album you’re holding.’ -

💿Elgar - out 25 September

🎻 We are delighted to share the forthcoming album from Thomas Bowes recorded at Studio 1, Abbey Road Studios - where Elgar himself recorded his Violin Concerto with Yehudi Menuhin in 1932.

Thomas Bowes is joined by Nic Fallowfield and Sinfonia Arcadiana in recordings of Elgar’s Violin Concerto, Op. 61 alongside five of his miniatures in new orchestral arrangements by Eleanor Alberga OBE.

This is a truly special album that is best summed up in Thomas’ own words:

‘My relationship with Elgar’s concerto has been a constant source of emotional nourishment since my early teens, a constant friend, if you will, in times good and bad… This work speaks to those deepest and most secret regions of us all.’
