John Webster has been active in politics since the late 1960s. He has worked in senior positions in local government and is a long-term critic of Government economic, environmental and foreign policy. He served two terms as Deputy Leader of Cheltenham Borough Council as a Liberal Democrat before returning to the Forest of Dean and re-joining the Labour Party which he had first joined in 1980 and left at the time that it was clear that Britain was to support the war in Iraq. He is member of Jewish Voice for Labour which is led by Jews who are opposed to the actions of the Israeli Government.

Smiths Auction Rooms is a cool retreat in the hot weather as they are based in an old Methodist chapel which makes it a lovely place to work in the summer months. They have had an unusual week - with some quiet moments interspersed with rushes of rapid activity, when a number of larger consignments of good quality antiques have all arrived at the same time.

It was so hot in work last week that I found a little bunny flaked out on a client’s patio. My first thought was that it had Myxomtosis – the worst disease ever ‘invented’. But his eyes were clear and he seemed OK other than being ‘unnaturally approachable’.

I noticed a memorial stone opposite the Speech House the other day. The stone, erected in 1957, records the supposed centre of the Forest as well as commemorating Viscount Bledisloe’s 50 years service as a Forest of Dean verderer. The verderers were ‘esquires or gentlemen of good account, ability, wise and discreet men, well learned in the laws of the forest’. Their judicial powers were removed at the end of the 19th Century, but the verderers still have an influential role in ‘keeping an eye’ on what is going on in the Forest, and the appointment is in recognition of their service to the Forest. When Queen Elizabeth II visited that year as part of a “getting to know her kingdom’ tour of the region, the Speech House reception committee was headed by Viscount Bledisloe.
