A team of British researchers reports that the Carrbridge and Dava Moor wildfire has now been classified as the UK's first official 'mega' fire. Our Director of Moorland Ross Ewing's letter published in The Times and The Sunday Times today, stresses the need for better planning for future wildfires, both in terms of wildfire prevention and effective coordination between the public and private sector, to fight these massive blazes.
Scottish Land & Estates has long argued that the one element of fire behaviour that we can control is the fuel load. By reducing the fuel that burns in a wildfire -- through preventative muirburn and, to a lesser extent, cutting, we are helping reduce the damage caused by wildfire and helping prevent wildfires starting. All government organisations and authorities must recognise that we need all available tools at our disposal to protect some of our most treasured landscapes, habitats and carbon stores Grampian Moorland Group Strathdearn & Speyside Moorland Group Tayside and Central Scotland Moorland Group Southern Uplands Moorland Group Scottish Gamekeepers Association SGA GWCT Scotland NatureScot Angus Glens Moorland Group
