It is with great sadness to report that in the early hours of Tuesday morning, Brian Rice passed away following a brave battle with cancer. Brian, affectionately known as Bash, worked as a Greenkeeper of Southwell Golf Club for many years and was a hugely popular member of the club. He was a talented golfer and it was always a pleasure to play alongside him as he always played the game with a smile on his face. He particularly enjoyed reaching the 17th tee as by then, he would be looking forward to reaching the clubhouse where he knew he would be waiting for his good friend Bernard Forbes to serve him a beer which he would enjoy after the round with his many friends! Bash represented the club on numerous occasion and has his name on the honours boards for countless successes. He also won the Men’s Club Championship but he took even greater pleasure in winning the Men’s Singles Knockout Trophy in 2002 by defeating his close pal, David Britten on the 18th green, a victory which he loved to remind Dave about whenever possible! A true character and stalwart of Southwell Golf Club, Bash’s cheery presence will be missed by all who knew him and our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Julie and children David, Sarah and Richard.
