Olivia Moore and Adam Fairhall - Triangles

Moore and Fairhall’s debut duo album brings Indian classical music, American folk music and contemporary jazz together in a highly individual manner. The improvisational aspects of the source traditions are used as an opportunity to blend disparate compositional materials and soloing vocabularies in a subtle way, resulting in a distinctive duo idiom that extends the performers’ established artistic voices.

The format of accordion and violin is particularly well suited for this material; Olivia switches between violins depending on whether the material is Indian or Western in origin, and Adam switches between a tradition Stradella accordion (for highly rhythmic, folk-based playing) and a free bass accordion (for more contrapuntal playing). The repertoire is a mixture of original pieces, Appalachian folk tunes and pieces inherited by Olivia from her Indian teacher. All are approached with an overall sense of creative improvisation.

“Nourished by Indian and jazz traditions, but with an elegance that comes from her classical training, Olivia Moore’s violin has an Eastern tang that is genuinely entrancing” – Manchester Evening News
“A hugely accomplished instrumentalist” – The Wire

“Adam Fairhall is a total star” – Independent on Sunday

This release was made possible with grateful support from Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants.

Juliana Day - recorders, whistles, vocals and live electronics

Captured live through a loop pedal and effects unit, Capillary Cycles is an improvised, loosely structured work for recorders, voice, and live electronics. Drawing inspiration from the vastness and complexity of sea and desert landscapes, it delves into both the microscopic and the cosmic. The work explores the interplay between the internal and external, reflecting on the rhythms and systems within the body and their connections to the world around us.

Juliana Day’s music uses a haunting combination of the lower family of recorders, whistles, vocalisations, found sounds and field recordings, building up looped layers and ambient, improvised textures. Described as “fascinating and contemplative” (Jazzwise), her music takes influence from choral music, folk music, minimalism and artists such as Tim Hecker, Kali Malone, Steve Reich, Ichiko Aoba, William Basinski and Pauline Oliveros.

This is Juliana Day’s second release with NEWJAiM Recordings
