With great pleasure we announce the 9th year of Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music.

Launched 2017, the festival continues to respond to the city’s appetite for a contemporary grass roots jazz festival, presenting an innovative and diverse international line up, celebrating and pushing boundaries that challenge perceptions of jazz and improvised music.

Despite this year working with restricted funding, we’re grateful that with support from our key partners and investors we’re managing to keep the flame alive and still present a high quality programme of some of the finest regional, national and international improvising musicians.

12 concerts featuring 21 Performances and 4 workshops will take place as part of this years festival spread over 7 days.

Along with UK artists we are pleased to welcome Alister Spence and Tony Buck (Australia), Nina Garcia (France), Biliana Voutchkova (Bulgaria), Michael Thieke (Germany), Luigi Marino (Italy).

As ever events take place across a variety of spaces that provide both the opportunity for rich musical performances whilst also celebrating the heritage of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Venues include Jesmond Swimming Pool, Ouseburn Victoria Tunnel, The Cumberland Arms, The Globe, The Literary and Philosophical Society, Newcastle Civic Centre, Gosforth Civic Theatre.

New projects include celebrations of vital African American artists Thelonious Monk (Xhosa Cole), Albert Ayler (Richard Scott’s ‘Ayler in Sweden’), Duke Ellington (Zoë Gilby with Andy Champion) and civil rights writer and activist James Baldwin (Neil Charles ‘The Baldwin Project’)

It’s looking like another fantastic year of events that promise to deliver an exhilarating ride into the world of contemporary jazz and improvisation.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of our lead partners and investors Jazz North East, Jazz.Coop at The Globe, GemArts, James Smith and Chris Calver at The Literary and Philosophical Society, Jesmond Swimming Pool, Ouseburn Trust, Andy Hamilton and British Society of Aesthetics, Paul Bream and Jazz Alert.

Olivia Moore and Adam Fairhall - Triangles

Moore and Fairhall’s debut duo album brings Indian classical music, American folk music and contemporary jazz together in a highly individual manner. The improvisational aspects of the source traditions are used as an opportunity to blend disparate compositional materials and soloing vocabularies in a subtle way, resulting in a distinctive duo idiom that extends the performers’ established artistic voices.

The format of accordion and violin is particularly well suited for this material; Olivia switches between violins depending on whether the material is Indian or Western in origin, and Adam switches between a tradition Stradella accordion (for highly rhythmic, folk-based playing) and a free bass accordion (for more contrapuntal playing). The repertoire is a mixture of original pieces, Appalachian folk tunes and pieces inherited by Olivia from her Indian teacher. All are approached with an overall sense of creative improvisation.

“Nourished by Indian and jazz traditions, but with an elegance that comes from her classical training, Olivia Moore’s violin has an Eastern tang that is genuinely entrancing” – Manchester Evening News
“A hugely accomplished instrumentalist” – The Wire

“Adam Fairhall is a total star” – Independent on Sunday

This release was made possible with grateful support from Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants.

Juliana Day - recorders, whistles, vocals and live electronics

Captured live through a loop pedal and effects unit, Capillary Cycles is an improvised, loosely structured work for recorders, voice, and live electronics. Drawing inspiration from the vastness and complexity of sea and desert landscapes, it delves into both the microscopic and the cosmic. The work explores the interplay between the internal and external, reflecting on the rhythms and systems within the body and their connections to the world around us.

Juliana Day’s music uses a haunting combination of the lower family of recorders, whistles, vocalisations, found sounds and field recordings, building up looped layers and ambient, improvised textures. Described as “fascinating and contemplative” (Jazzwise), her music takes influence from choral music, folk music, minimalism and artists such as Tim Hecker, Kali Malone, Steve Reich, Ichiko Aoba, William Basinski and Pauline Oliveros.

This is Juliana Day’s second release with NEWJAiM Recordings

There’s just 5 days left for The Globe crowdfunder. Please head over and drop them a few quid to help maintain one of our excellent Newcastle venues supporting music of many persuasions.

The Globe celebrated 10 years as an independent music venue in 2024. It now needs help to restore its finances & equipment for the next ten.

A huge belated thanks to everyone that made it down to this year's Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music, there’s been so much to do after the festival we’ve only just had a chance to start catching up!

We had an amazing time with so many brilliant performers and exceptional audiences, all the volunteers, staffing and venues were fantastic and we can’t wait for next year with some fantastic artists already lined up to visit.

There are still some copies of the festival's commissioned interludes music by Juliana Day which has been receiving some great reviews.
