In the 1600s, Newcastle Castle's Dungeon was used as a gaol.

Prisoners would be kept in filthy condtions, knee deep in water and passers-by could pay sixpence to come along and jeer at the prisoners!

🎆 New Year's Eve Fireworks return to Newcastle Quayside this Year

Howaymanay was fantastic last year and I'm so pleased it's returning.

The quayside is transformed with live music, roaming performers, street entertainment, food & drinks with a big fireworks finale.

It was such a good atmosphere last year with lots going on.

It can get chilly so wrap up well. I recommend combining with a visit to a few quayside bars / restaurants to warm up.

We combined the quayside festivities with a meal at Khai Khai, cocktails at the Slug & Lettuce and stayed overnight at Hotel Du Vin last year which was brill & I would recommend all.

⏰ At 6pm there will be FREE fireworks like the ones in the attached pictures with entertainment and street food. No ticket is needed, just turn up.

⏰ From 8:30pm you will need a ticket (£8+bf) to access the quayside and enjoy the live music and entertainment with a big countdown and grand fireworks finale at midnight (purchase via ticket tailor).

Need to know 👇
-Under 16s need to be accompanied by an adult.
-No pet dogs allowed.
-The Millennium Bridge closed at 10:30pm.
-There are three entrances - make sure you make a plan and select the correct one as this cannot be changed.

🇲🇽 A New Mexican Restaurant has Opened in The Gate Newcastle

Introducing Tia’s Mexican Cantina. They’re already a firm favourite in Durham where they’ve established a loyal customer base. To celebrate their 30th year of business, they’re going BIG & have opened their second branch inside The Gate, Newcastle.

Here’s what to expect :

🌯 Dietery requirements are well catered for with a range of GF, vegetarian and vegan dishes - google their website for current menus

⏰ Open daily from 11:30am. They close at 11pm on most evenings but Friday and Saturday evenings are party nights with tequila, cocktails and music until late

🥳 The kids menu is good value at £8.95 for a main, dessert and drink. Lots of options for everyone from mini chimichangas to plain chicken wraps & veggie options too

🌮 The main menu includes lots of crowd pleasers including loaded nachos, a special recipe chilli con carne and fajitas alongside traditional Mexican classics such as Mole Pablana (Mexico’s national dish). Their build-your-own taco trays are ideal for fussy eaters

🍸Drinks wise you can expect a range of tequilas (including Rose) frozen margaritas, Mexican cocktails, Mexican beers (inc Modelo) & a fully stocked bottle bar

🤑 £12 Drinks Deals All Day Sun - Thurs (any 4 flavoured tequila shots / 4 Bud / 4 WKD for £12)

🚘 Enjoy 6 hours FREE parking at The Gate with The Gate’s ‘Film & Food’ deal. Present your restaurant receipt (minimum £5 spend), cinema ticket and reg to Cineworld staff to validate. T&Cs apply.

💰 Expect to pay £12 for a lunch main, £20 for a Mexican platter and £18.50 for Chicken Fajitas (full menu and prices on their website).

I have not visited as a customer yet so can’t comment on or review the dining experience (but will soon). It’s lush to see a small indie open up here though & I wish Tias the best of luck.

BREAKING NEWS : Alice Fearn, formerly a West End Elphaba in Wicked, will be taking on the role of Grizabella in CATS when the production visits Newcastle Theatre Royal Tue 8 – Sat 19 Jun 2027.

Cats was the first ever musical I watched when it visited Newcastle Theatre Royal in the 90s and I am very excited for it's return next year!
