Emergency Services Respond to Incident at Newport Castle Involving Young Female
Last night, around 7pm on 14th October, emergency services were called to Newport Castle following reports of a young female in distress near the area. Teams from South Wales Fire and Rescue, along with the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA), were deployed to the scene with rescue boats—one from Cardiff and another from Newport—to assist in the operation. Gwent Police were also on-site, managing the situation and securing the area.
Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of the emergency teams, the young woman was taken to safety, and the situation was brought under control. The nearby bridge remained open, allowing traffic to continue while the operation was underway.
Well known local rapper Wesley Kenny, widely known as Murkage, witnessed the incident. "As I was coming out of a near by meeting I saw someone in distress and wanted to help them. So as I was calling emergency services, they were already arriving, so the alarm had
already been raised" Wesley shared. He also mentioned seeing fire and rescue teams deploy a rescue boat from the riverbank and stayed nearby to offer a helping hand. Wesley also expressed his concern about mental health challenges among young people, adding, "Mental health among youngsters is at an all-time low, and we really need to do more to support them." Wesley also told us he is not only known for his music but also for his ongoing efforts to raise awareness about mental health and support young people through various community initiatives.
A few other witnesses also stepped in to keep an eye on the river to assist the search and rescue teams.
The emergency services did an outstanding job ensuring the young woman's safety. This incident highlights both the importance of mental health awareness and the vital work of our local emergency teams in responding quickly and efficiently to those in need.
