RIP Christabel Hutchings

It is with deep sadness that we have to report the unexpected death of Christabel Hutchings, who passed away earlier this week. Christabel was a tireless supporter of Newport, and worked hard on behalf of the Museum, Art Gallery and the Ship and Transporter bridge. She was Chairperson of Fonmag and the driving force behind its activities. She will be sadly missed as a friend and a colleague, and leaves behind a lasting legacy. RIP my friend.

Riverbank Rescue: Person Trapped in Mud Near Newport's Riverfront Theatre

A dramatic rescue unfolded near the Riverfront Theatre this evening after a person, was found trapped in thick mud on the riverbank of the River Usk.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the person leap into the river, but due to the low tide, she ended up stranded on the muddy bank rather than in the water.

South Wales Fire and Rescue quickly responded, sending over ten vehicles to the scene. Police and emergency services worked together to secure the area,

Firefighters employed specialised equipment to extract the woman safely, using a crane to lift her out of the mud and onto solid ground.

The area remains closed to cyclists and pedestrians, and traffic is moving slowly due to one lane closure from the Old Green Roundabout toward Friars Walk.

Ikea Branded Sustainable Living Shop Pops Up in Newport’s City Centre

A surprise new Ikea-branded sustainable living store has appeared under Olympia House in Newport’s city centre. The pop-up, which showcases Ikea’s eco-friendly products and living solutions, has been spotted by residents and shoppers intrigued by the Ikea posters and displays in the windows.

Yesterday, curious passersby observed two women in Ikea uniforms inside the store, confirming the connection to the iconic Swedish furniture brand. The space is set up to resemble a “sustainable living court,” illustrating ways to create an eco-friendly, home using Ikea products.

The concept appears to center around promoting Ikea’s sustainable product line, with displays featuring items like low-energy lighting solutions, reusable storage options, and furniture made from renewable materials. While Ikea has yet to confirm details of the pop-up, its presence has already generated considerable buzz among locals interested in eco-conscious living.

Emergency Services Respond to Incident at Newport Castle Involving Young Female

Last night, around 7pm on 14th October, emergency services were called to Newport Castle following reports of a young female in distress near the area. Teams from South Wales Fire and Rescue, along with the Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA), were deployed to the scene with rescue boats—one from Cardiff and another from Newport—to assist in the operation. Gwent Police were also on-site, managing the situation and securing the area.

Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of the emergency teams, the young woman was taken to safety, and the situation was brought under control. The nearby bridge remained open, allowing traffic to continue while the operation was underway.

Well known local rapper Wesley Kenny, widely known as Murkage, witnessed the incident. "As I was coming out of a near by meeting I saw someone in distress and wanted to help them. So as I was calling emergency services, they were already arriving, so the alarm had
already been raised" Wesley shared. He also mentioned seeing fire and rescue teams deploy a rescue boat from the riverbank and stayed nearby to offer a helping hand. Wesley also expressed his concern about mental health challenges among young people, adding, "Mental health among youngsters is at an all-time low, and we really need to do more to support them." Wesley also told us he is not only known for his music but also for his ongoing efforts to raise awareness about mental health and support young people through various community initiatives.

A few other witnesses also stepped in to keep an eye on the river to assist the search and rescue teams.

The emergency services did an outstanding job ensuring the young woman's safety. This incident highlights both the importance of mental health awareness and the vital work of our local emergency teams in responding quickly and efficiently to those in need.
