Newport City Council is in the middle of a housing crisis. The Council are currently asking for feedback on their proposed budget - respond here newport.gov.uk/budget
The Council has said its budget is under severe pressure due to a lack of emergency housing in the city.
It says this crisis will mean it is £2 million over budget this year.
Reliance on costly temporary accommodation (hotels, BNBs) sets Newport Council back £65/night on average.
The council says it is set to fund an additional £600,000 for homelessness services and outsource its debt advice to Citizens Advice Newport
Welsh Government data reveals 540 households are at risk of homelessness in Newport, fifth highest among Welsh councils.
The number of street homeless is the highest in Wales however it has recently dropped 36% from the record highs hit last year.
In England, 158 councils recently held an emergency housing summit. 20 stated they were near bankruptcy due to a funding gap of £4bn predicted in 2 years.
Temporary accommodation use in the UK now costs £1.74bn Demand is up 89% in a decade, reaching 104,000.
