The clocktower on the Civic Centre in Newport is having a much needed clean. Shooting this set of pictures got me thinking. How does washing a massive building, from a cheery picker, hundreds of feet in the air relate to running a small business? That's right, not a all really!
But still, just like small business owners I take my hat of to them!

If you're doing something brilliant up high and I can capture it from the ground, please get in touch 🤣

Over the Christmas period I had a job in Penarth to photograph the Welsh Green Party leader Anthony Slaughter for The Will Hayward Newsletter.

One thing I hate in politics is standard and boring headshots. Getting people to engage with politics is really important and a key part of that is showing the actors within politics as individuals. Photography can do this in a way words never can.

Perhaps somewhat fittingly considering it was the Green leader, the wild weather is always a risk when taking pictures outside…by the sea…in December. Despite the challenges, I am really pleased with how this set came together.

Let me help make your story real with fresh creative images.

This week I headed down to the Senedd in Cardiff Bay to photograph the Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth.

The images were for this weekend’s Will Hayward Newsletter.

While there are differences in photography for journalism and commercial clients, ultimately it is about telling the best possible visual story. Images make a story real.

It is also a pleasure to spend time at the Welsh Parliament. It is easy to take for granted how incredible that building is.

Let me help make your story real with fresh creative images.

Yesterday was a busy and productive day creating content for the NorDan team, who have just opened a new office in Wales. We captured a range of photos and videos in their sleek new showroom, followed by a shoot at Cardiff Bay to provide a strong sense of location and context.

For many businesses, August can be a quiet time.

Unless you’re renting surfboards, selling ice cream or working in hospitality, the chances are you will see a fall in demand during the hot summer months. Especially a business like ours which has a strong B2B element to it.

Though we have worked on some really great jobs over the last few weeks, the summer lull has enabled us to work on a little side project - directing, shooting and editing our own advert!

One of the best things about working in creative industries is that you get to be… well… creative. We gave ourselves the challenge to be able to shoot and edit the video in just a few days.

In our downtime we have scripted, story boarded and mapped out the entire video which we will be shooting over the bank holiday weekend in a fortnight.

Given our pride at being a Welsh company we have decided to film in just under a dozen different locations around the south of Cymru (as well as our offices in Newport city centre).

The video itself is only going to be a minute in length, which is actually fairly long when you consider how short attention spans are online. However the quick jumps between different locations, while maintaining a coherent narrative, will keep viewers engaged.

When you think about it, it’s a really interesting concept to produce a video advertising the fact that you produce video! The quality of the advert itself will be a direct reflection of our product.

Of course this is a risk. A bad advert would hardly be a ringing endorsement of our services.

But in our view there is no risk at all. While we are still learning about the day to day of running a company, one thing we have absolutely no doubt about is our ability to tell compelling stories in a professional, entertaining and succinct way.

On top of this, it is genuinely so much fun to create an advert. Without wanting to sound cheesy, when you are your own client, the only limit factor is your own imagination.

Keep your eyes on socials for the new ad in September.

Earlier this week something amazing happened.

We were working on a job for a client in Cardiff shooting and editing some pictures and video for a campaign they were doing. A couple of days later; job edited, delivered and approved, we fired off the invoice.

Within minutes the banking app pinged to say the client had paid the invoice. We dropped them a message thanking them for their swift payment. To this they replied saying how much they always pay as quickly as possible because they value it so much when their own clients do the same.

As a new business it is hard to express how helpful prompt payment is. Cash flow is a real challenge for all start-ups and having the money in the bank makes navigating those early months so much easier.

But there is also the benefit of not needing to spend time following up invoices. We want to spend our time doing what we do best, helping our clients tell stories in the best possible way, not chasing payment.

As a start-up there is still a real thrill at being paid directly for our work through our own business. Although we have been telling stories with pictures and video for decades this has always been as an employee in somebody else’s business.

Rob Norman is an award winning photographer who has covered some of the biggest events in modern British history. He ran the Western Mail and WalesOnline picture desks for over 15 years in a dynamic and fast paced newsroom environment.

Darryl Corner was the head of commercial video for Reach plc. He specialised in planning and delivering high quality video for a huge range of commercial clients.

Now, together as HayMan Media we are doing this ourselves. It is our name over the door and we both get a real rush because of this.

A key driver for both of us in launching HayMan Media was that we pride ourselves on delivering to a high standard and being paid within minutes feels like a real vindication of our approach.

Why did we choose Newport?

Choosing where to base your business is a massive deal.

For a while we seriously considered not having an office, after all in a post-pandemic world it is more viable than ever to work fully remotely.

The nature of our business is that much of the work is out and about anyway. Both the images and video side of our company are usually based around going directly to the client to help them tell their stories. Even when it comes to podcasting one of our key offers to customers is that we can set up a mobile podcast studio wherever is convenient to them.

When you add in the hassle and the fixed costs that come with renting bricks and mortar it seemed a no-brainer to stay remote. Though our directors have over 60 years of experience honing what we do, HayMan Media itself is new, and we all know the survival rates for new companies.

Given that the key reason for early business failure is cash flow, why have we decided to take on our premises on North Street and give ourselves a hard target of the cash we HAVE to earn every month? There are several answers to this but the key one is “Newport”.

Location

Our location is, frankly, perfect. We are just 90 seconds walk (that’s right we have tested it) from Newport Station. This means we are 15 minutes for Cardiff and just over 30 minutes from Bristol. If people are driving we are five minutes off the M4. There is also parking literally straight across the road. It was an opportunity we just couldn’t pass up.

The office and landlord

This building itself is owned by the amazing graphic design company Parade Design. They took an unloved building, and totally renovated it into this stunning creative space..

A big thing for us was to have an environment which stimulates good creativity and storytelling. So many office spaces these days are whitewashed and soulless and the second we walked into the Parade offices in Newport we knew it was a place we could (literally) do business.

The thing that really clinched it in terms of the space was the ability to record podcasts in three different settings. There was our self-contained office where we could record purely high quality audio podcasts, but there was also space for more ambitious recordings.

The sofa area and the boardroom table enable us to create spaces for quality video recording meaning that clients can have incredible video of their podcast for sharing on both their website and social media. This is becoming an ever more vital element of podcast promotion.

The city itself

The final clincher for choosing Newport was the direction of travel the city is currently on. There is a real buzz there at the moment. Developments like the Market as well as projects like the PopUp Business School are indicative of a city which is on the up.

We were also really drawn to Newport’s radical history, musical legacy and enduring sense of community. Combine this with the steps taken to develop it, and we truly feel like we are at the start of something really good here in Wales’ third largest city.
